Does anyone know much about the Kesbangpol. I read on the internet they are a policy implementation and formulation government organisation. For what purpose would they need to copy our passports and ID etc.

Providing ID or passport copy is pretty common even just to enter some office buildings, nothing to be worried about IMHO

Thanks for the reassurance. It's a small village in East Jave but there are 5 orang asing here mainly due to the idylic lifestyle opportunity and surf break. Town is 40 minutes drive and City 3 hours away so whenever some 'new' officials turn up I always wonder what new hoops we have to jump through and how much is this going to cost.

There isn't much more I can tell you. Some guy from the Kesbangpol turned up on Wednesday. He had an official looking laminated surat that he used to claim the authority and insisted on taking photos of our passports. I was hoping you could tell me what, for or why.

Turned up where. Why. For what reason? He must have said why he was there? In your office? Did you take a copy of his ID? His business card?

In cases like these just tell him your passport is being renewed and can he come back tomorrow at 11a.m.
If that doesn't scare him then make sure at 11a.m you have someone be there who isn't scared. Like a real policeman or a real lawyer.

Does anyone know much about the Kesbangpol. I read on the internet they are a policy implementation and formulation government organisation. For what purpose would they need to copy our passports and ID etc.
Kesbangpol has, among other duties and along with other governmental agencies, the duties to supervise and monitor the presence of foreigners in the provinces. It is absolutely normal that they came to see you guys, especially if you live anywhere close to known point of entry/exit of refugees/illegal immigrants (close to land borders or sea borders) or in provinces with a high number of foreign workers.

It is tradition for Indonesian gevernment to believe that foreigners have to be kept an eye on because, if the government reckons that they can have a positive impact on the economy if their activity is legal, they believe they can also have negative impact on culture, tradition, religion, economy (if they have an illegal working status)... etc. Well, when I read the news or see the behavior of some of them, I can't really blame them. Injecting money in the economy doesn't grant all rights.

With any official, kindly ask a copy of their Surat Tugas and ID and ask permission to photography it. A rogue copper won't bother to forge an ID or a document and it should scare him enough. If he is rogue, he is there to grab a quick buck, not to attract troubles on himself. Most would back down at the first sign of resistance..

In your case, I believe they were totally legit. Since 2019 a lot of provinces have pushed Kesbangpol to monitor directly on the field foreign activities.

It's an ill advice to lie to a government official. If you follow Snpark advise and tell him that your passport is being renewed and that he showed up the day after, you are inviting a lot of unnecessary problems having to explain you lied.

Just keep a record of all document submitted by coppers/officials and behave politely with no sign of stress or anger. Not all cops/officials are corrupted and some just do their job. No documents or objects should be confiscated without a surat penyitaan. If they don't have a surat penyitaan, they have only two choices: leaving your documents/objects with you or finding two independant witnesses, usually including the chief of the desa/kelurahan, to witness the seizure,

I understand it is annoying to feel suspected of wrong doings or always unders scrutinity, especially when it involves officials with little notion of what abuse of power means, but if you get your rights respected in a polite way and avoid to play the straight and rough confrontation game, and if you are not stupid enough to distribute money/uang rokok to them thinking it will get you rid of them, the various agencies will quickly forget about you.

Sorry my bad I meant like as an excuse to make him return as if your passport is not with you, in the office, not in your possession but you will have it tomorrow or you can go to his office etc etc
