Jakarta 499 years old

Well, not really of course. Its name was Batavia for quite a long time also.

Next year the celebrations should be overwhelming. Now it’s somewhat underwhelming; mostly sales promotions and fairs and expo’s.

And 1 rupiah to take public transportation. The same coming weekend btw.

They had a huge fireworks show next to our hotel last night. From 11pm to almost 2am. I can only imagine what next year will be like!

Interesting to note the use of trams. In America the burgeoning car industry strove mightily to turn state governments away from public transport to ensure the motor car became the principal mode of transport. I wonder what turned Jakarta way from expanding the tram system? In Australia, Sydney used to have trams but then began closing lines from 1957, blaming trams for traffic congestion. The gains were short lived and more recently Sydney is expanding a light rail network. Horse driven trams were introduced in Melbourne in 1884. Now Melbourne still has a terrific tram network. I also note that the policeman supervising intersection traffic was equipped with a sword. That would help ensure compliance

I've always wondered how nice and clean the Jakarta air during those years (and the temperature too). I remember even in the 80s a weekend holiday in Mega Mendung, we didn't need no air conditioning and we were shivering at night..now, can't sleep without the AC! People in the early ears dressed up nice even probably just to go to the ice cream parlor. I would've been sweating!
