Hey all

I'm an Irish expat that's currently living in Bandung with my Indonesian wife. When I'm not working (I'm a freelance writer) I like reading books, watching movies, and playing Steam games on my Macbook. Looking forward to getting to know some of you and learning more about living in Indonesia

Babakan Ciparay. We were living in Tangerang for the past 5 months but with my wife now pregnant with our first child we decided to move back and are now staying with her parents until we can find a place to rent on our own.

Hi, welcome to the forum (& Bandung) it sounds like you have exciting times ahead.

I'm sure I do. Already got my mind racing on how I'll be able to save enough to buy a home while also paying for schooling in the years to come. One thing at a time though as they say.

Ah, I love babies. Do you know what hospital you’re going to deliver at?

I have no idea where Babakan Ciparay is. I’ll have to ask my wife.

I don’t know how the housing market is these days. We rented a house for 3.5 years or so, and then finally found a somewhat affordable house down the street that we bought and renovated.

Often, if they sniff a bule is involved, prices start to go crazy.

Haven't decided on that yet but with the current crisis, I don't think it's wise to go anywhere near a hospital unless it's an emergency. We might instead look at a local clinic if that's possible

Yah we're probably a good 3-4 years away from having the money saved to even start looking but in any case, I've just spent the last few hours combing the net to get a sense of how much we'll need. I was pretty shocked to see how much some people charge for what is basically an expensive box. Starting to think now it might be better to buy some land and build the house ourselves but a readthrough here of some people's experiences with that also left me feeling defeated. I'm sure I'll be picking all your brains on this in the months to come

With a bit over thirty years in media, mostly freelance, I am curious about your freelance writing. If that is detail you don't wish to post here you are welcome to email me. [email protected]

A particularly difficult time to freelance with so many media people losing jobs even before the Corona virus. A specialist niche might be manageable.

Good luck.

I do business writing, mostly for real estate brokerages. This usually involves writing short to long blog posts but I'm trying to move up to higher-paying gigs now like white papers and case studies. if you're curious you can find my writer's website here: englishthewriteway.com
The virus caused a stop to my income at first as my main client is from New York but he's now ready to restart the blog again so that's a relief. Also used the time to find a new client (also from New York) that needs some property listing descriptions. That promises to pay well and be steady work so I should be good again for the foreseeable future.

Thanks. I checked out the website. Good to have some income in these difficult times. I hope the cash keeps flowing.

what is you criteria for a place to stay- inner city, out a bit, in the main tourity areas, out in a quiet village, do you have any transport?... that kind of thing.

By all means Pm me as I do know of a place for rent at a reasonable price but it is pretty big & in need of some work... & it has been on & off the selling market for quite some years.... just kinda thinking aloud here as it may be a good rental that could transform to buying place.

Moderation note:

I have removed several posts that were derailing a welcome thread. I am discussing with other moderators whether these should be spun off into a different thread, or just remain deleted.

Dear Irish,

Ah, We've been out in Dago a few times, usually to the Golden Monkey. Hopefully once this pandemic stabilizes we can check it out, thanks for the invite.
