My Indonesian wife (Australian resident) will be returning to Jakarta for a two months visit taking her iPhone 15 (purchased in Aus.) with her.
Does she need to register the IMEI number of her phone with Customs at the airport?
Will she be liable for 40% tax on value of phone over US$ 500? i.e. does the new regulation apply to Indo citizens living abroad returning to Indo for short visit/holiday (less than 90 days) and does it apply to all iPhones or just the new iPhone 16? TIA

No, for only 2 months one does not need to register one's IMEI for tax.
Just buy a tourist SIM-card for your phone, e.g. at a Telkomsel booth at Soekarno-Hatta airport.

Otherwise let a family member (with kartu keluarga) of your wife buy a sim-card.

Yes, she has KTP.
But as I understand it, doesn't matter who buys a SIM, it won't work in a phone that hasn't had its IMIE registered?

That's why she or a family member needs to buy a tourist sim card. It will work because Telkomsel wil 'unblock' her IMEI for 3 months. So, she ofcourse has to register her IMEI at Telkomsel not at the tax office bea cukai.

My understanding is you need to present your foreign passport to buy a Tourist sim card - they are not sold to Indonesian passport holders.

We visited Telkomsel store and explained to them our situation, that we are not living in Indonesia, practically we are "tourist" for 1 month only. So, the staff told us that we can use Telkomsel SIM card in my phone for 3 months. She did it in few minutes.
Good deal. Problem solved without wasting our time to return to custom office in airport.

That is the crux. The IEMI must be regsistered for it to work without a tourist SIM. You can blame all the people importing phones and not paying taxes for the problem. If it hadn't been such a large issue they never would have went this far.

Only Telkomsel can help. Register the IMEI at their office and get a local sim card.

Has to be done through customs and taxes paid. Telcomsel does not control the blacklist/whitelist.

I think this may have been before the regulations changed (April 2020) - now a local sim will only work on a phone that has had its IEMI registered.

In the end Telkomsel will be the one who really can help, being the technical company and 'owner' of the network. It's like when a patient is knocking on the door of a hospital without health insurance. According to hospital policy, this patient will not get treatment. But in the end the doctor or surgent are the ones who will decide to help or not. Same situation with the president and his generals ... in the end ...
