Indonesia set to introduce strict new law banning sex outside of marriage

I don't think it's that different from existing practices. Of course it could be used by irreputable establishments to blackmail customers. Imagine, a tourist goes for a ++massage, then the husband of the lady comes in and demands money from the tourist or he'll go to the police. On the other hand there are always plenty of laws here that people can use against you if they want, for example the pornography law.
Certainly won't be implemented in Bali, that's for sure. Also won't stop people being nakal either.
Now if they passed an Iranian-style law making all women wear the jilbab, with accompanying morality police like in backward places like Aceh, that could get interesting.

This news of a potential change in Indonesian law is certainly hitting the news around the world. In my opinion, it doesn’t reflect well on Indonesia.

I hope it does not become law. Certainly would reduce tourism.

No sex outside marriage? I thought after 10 years INside marriage, there will be little sex anyway? (I wouldn't know...mine is still under ten!)

You'd think that, but nine times out of ten if you mention Indonesia people in the United States are nonplussed. They have no idea what it is/where it is, they just think they don't care for it. If you mention Bali, suddenly they're sharing with you all their plans to go there "someday".

They think it's two separate countries. They can't even pick Indonesia out on a map usually, much less get dissuaded from visiting. Not too worried about what Western press makes this out to be and how it might influence people.

Australia's national TV service ran the story today.

Indonesia to ban sex outside of marriage as part of changes to its criminal code

A great promotion for the tourist industry. With that, not infrequently, Indonesian TV shows raids on Kos and low cost accommodation in Jakarta dragging out people who are not married. Not a good idea to be poor. I don't see this happening at 5 star hotels.

Oh yes, they are, and they are working hard on it.

When someone says that people of a certain nationality are "going back to the stone age", it implies that that people are primitives. They're not, and I think you recognize that. But for our Indonesian readership, how should they interpret the original comment and your agreement with it? Will they interpret as you perhaps intended, that the government is moving against progress and democracy, or will they interpret it as an offensive take on their national identity?

You were so very on the mark when you ably spoke about the central government's slide toward autocratic controls. That's always a concern anyone should have when watching the politics of Indonesia. It's definitely my greatest concern for my family. Why not direct the conversation toward that rather than clumsily associating the Indonesian nation with being "backwards" as another put it?

You said a few years ago and now is 14-15 years ago.

Vietnam decriminalized gay marriage in 2015.

Reuters is the source of news, with news reporters. The original article is from Reuters.

Try and check in to a hotel in Vietnam even now with someone you are not married to and you will be rejected, even in 5 star hotels.

Good points to clarify.
Society will go back to the "stone age", or backward, middle ages, 19 century, whatever. If debates and free discourse are not allowed, there will be no exchange of ideas or progress, human, or scientific, or any other. And an autocratic state, to be functional, requires obedient and not very smart citizens. That kind of government system has no proper feedback about realities on the field, as sycophants are free to speak only, which leads to problems in the long term.

In essence, Indonesian national ideology and hence identity was set by a handful of Indonesian intellectuals heavily influenced by French and US philosophers and revolutionaries from the 18-19 century period, based on freedom and equality. However, Indonesian history was often not in concord with its founding principles, but when the country got real freedom in the period 1998-2017, the society flourished.

Is this factual?

I know several unmarried friends who have been with gf bf this year and had no problems booking or checking into hotels or cruises etc?

Was watching a YouTube video the other day, had a couple of well-to-do folks on it wondering why they couldn't get famous international brands to make shops in Brunei, even though the people there have a high income. First thing to pop into my mind, "I'm not going anywhere where I can have a hand lopped off because I was falsely accused of shoplifting.“ What are the odds of that happening? Really tiny, I'll admit. But, I'm not interested in rolling the dice. I'm certainly not doing it on vacation.

I'll just add that I would assume a country with regressive and inhumane laws to also have a shit legal system, since we already know human rights are not one of their priorities.

To those who say that most people from the developed world can't find Indonesia on a map, don't know anything about it; now they know one thing, it wants to prosecute consenting adults for having sex. What a great introduction. Bit like putting a "Beware of dog! No trespassers!" sign up, really makes strangers want to stop in for a cuppa.

But not ratified into law which takes min 3 years

They've just approved to vote on legislation

Indonesia in the spotlight today

@snpark

The House of Representatives (DPR) on Tuesday, December 6th, officially passed the Criminal Code Bill (RKUHP) into law in the 11th plenary today, which was led by Deputy Speaker Sufmi Dasco Ahmad.

The new criminal code will come into effect within three years of its passing, i.e. before Dec. 6, 2025. That’s more than enough time to get acquainted with some of the newest provisions so we can all stay out of trouble.

Adultery, or sexual intercourse not between a husband and a wife, is a crime punishable by up to one year in prison under RKUHP. Only close relatives (spouse, parents, or children), who may be negatively impacted by adultery or sex outside marriage, can report people for this crime.

So, the wife can make the argument that everyone benefits if she vists her handsome masseuse once a week and comes home a lot less grumpy?
Or, "My boss said she would fire me if I didn't give her proper service and you spend a lot of money darling"?
