Last night, I saw on Channel News Asia about Duterte (the Philippine president) publicly naming a few hundred names suspected of being involved in the drugs trade. The list includes prominent businessmen, politicians, government officials, police and military. It must be big news because even Bloomberg TV reported it today. They were ordered to report to some office within 24 hours, the firearms license of their bodyguards were cancelled, and probably banned from traveling too. Guilty or not, the burden of proof is on them. If they did not report, the police and/or military will hunt them down with shoot to kill order.

I think Indonesia can learn from the Philippines, but Indonesia just recently executed Freddy Budiman who started talking about his connections in the illicit business. In other words, he could have been a state witness to help the government in their effort on the war against drugs (if only the execution was postponed).

Yes, I don't think they could put Freddie away quick enough, one of our Fiends is in the Indonesian Drug Agency, she interrogated Freddie, he offered her money, she didn't take it, she isn't high enough up the chain of command, but I have to say the Philipino president is certainly making waves, imagine if the DEA in the US took a page out of his book.

No, I wouldn't even try to immagine if the US DEA copied it. Think of all the gun carrying sickos that would just up and kill someone and then just hang a sign on them, "drug dealer." No thanks. Prefer the government agencies to have some organization.

... Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

I don't think having presidents being able to order people to show up or else get shot is a good idea, regardless the motivation.

no .... I only remember his wife, what was her name ? ... That woman with the head not unlike a television with a big hairdo .... oh, & the little feet with many shoes ...[/QUOTE

Emelda Marco, yep lots of shoes, Hand bags and various works of art, I think the government tried to presurise her to return 40 tons of gold her old man had managed to take out the country, don't if they ever got it

Nope... but they have the shoes...

If I remember it right, Duterte set a target of 6 months to solve the drug problem. Let’s see if the “Donald Trump of the Philippines” can do it.

Still have the cash just like to Soehato kids have Indonesias.

You're right but I guess that's another liability the Filipinos have to suffer....you'd think they'd learn!
She was voted twice into the House of Representatives and her two kids are also politico legislators.

One thing I notice between Indonesians and Filipinos, Indonesians are more forgiving people than the Filipinos. Why? Suharto was allowed a hero’s burial while Marcos is not. But things will change, I remember the news that Duterte will allow it if he becomes president. So the Marcos family is probably preparing for it now, almost 30 years later.

Mostly in how not to treat their own people.....

What can Indonesia learn from the Philippines? Freddy's execution should have been postponed so he can talk, and the government can announce names and go after them.

That would be the reason to do the exicution as soon as possible.

I have read about these developments, apparently civilians are also given carte blanche to shoot other civilians without any proof - the bodies are left in the street with a piece of cardboard on them simply stating "drug dealer" reminded me of the communist purge her in RI in the 60s whereby jealous neighbors and feuding families would report each other as communist's to the authorities knowing full well that they would be "vanished"

What goes around, comes around; history suggests the the purgers often become the purgees.

I just found this and it is an interesting insight, from the perspective of one of the assassins :

There is no proof yet to link the killings to Duterte. But he is successful so far in using fear, otherwise, how can he solve the drug problem within 6 months? Criminals are not afraid of jail, they are afraid of death. And it’s contagious, that’s why many surrendered voluntarily. Indonesia also had death squads called ‘Petrus’ during Suharto’s time to fight criminality.
