A BPR's trade licence (PT BPR Tebas Lokarizki) has been withdrawn. I am not a customer there, but probably useful to make sure: LPS also protects foreigners, right? Even if they have no stay permit anymore (for example when temporary back to their home country)?

Some years ago BI opened the market and made it possible for foreigners to open a bank account (up to $50K) with only their passports.

Then they declared that the foreigners (and foreign investors) would also be protected under LPS. That was to be able to compete with other countries.

I don't know if the latter ever took effect however.

Most BPR would pay you a 8,50% interest rate (minus 20% tax) at the moment (feb 2020) and add freebies (for all nasabah) or cashback program (for fresh money and/or VIP nasabah), even for term deposits of 1 or 3 months only.
I have been investing unneeded cash in BPR's for the past 15 years and can only say good thing about the one I have done business with (5 so far in my city).
Funds invested, from foreigners or not, are insured as long as they don't exceed Rp 2 billions per nasabah and that the declared interest rate at the time the term deposit is contracted* is not superior to the Maximum Interest rate defined by LPS periodically.

* Example: On January 16th, having the feeling that LPS would decrease their maximum rate, I converted a bunch of 1 month term deposits I had to 6 and 12 months one. BPR gave me 8,75% and will pay me monthly the equivalent of the annual 8,75% rate for the whole length of each term deposits. On January 24th LPS decreased by .25% their maximum interest rate but my term deposits aren't affected and remain insured because at the time I contracted them LPS maximum rate was 8,75%.

Thanks. Very detailled and well explained (y)

Ya, I think you are right on the timing. Seems like every time the company gets close to re-certification, another regulatory agency steps out of the woodwork and wants something changed.

Last April BPR Legian went under, we were forewarned by our contact within the bank & advised to return the cashback we had received. We did so & 4 months later our investment was returned so we (only) lost the interest we would have accrued over that 4 months, we were told others had lost up to 6 billion due to accepting higher than the LPS rate.

We have also been advised by another contact within the banking industry to not accept cashback & just push for the maximum interest allowable under the LPS. Apparently the LPS will (can) look at your history.

On a different note, we withdrew money from BPR Lestari due to the arrogance of their marketing personnel (& told them so) & have since learned that Lestari refuses to give the maximum LPS rate for anything below 5 billion ….. lol,... seems they are after investors with much more money than sense seeing that the maximum allowed under the LPS is 2 billion.

Moved from Indonesian CDs to FR (Bonds)...ranging from around 7.5-8.25% per annum...with less tax (15% instead of 20%).

But bonds are -esp. here- somewhat more risky. Also, I kind of like the 1, 3, 6 month short term deposito possibilities, it makes I am able to react very fast with the money being available.

Thanks for the BPR details. I just arrived in Jakarta recently and have been looking for the best fixed deposit rates.
While commercial bank only offer 4 to 6%, BPR banks go up to 8.5% which makes a big difference.

Could you please advise :

1) if BPR banks are present in Jakarta ? If so which please ? Have tried searching on the web but am having trouble with all web sites coming up in Bahasa.

2) Which would be the top 3 or top 5 BPR bank in Jakarta based on :
2a- Reliability (size, number of branches, number of years in the business, etc) ?
2b- Interest rates. Eventhough I understand it is not advisable to exceed the max rate defined by LPS (not the 2 billion Rp cap) so as to benefit from insurance.
2c- Facilities such as web site or application at least to transfer money within Indonesia.

3) How easy is it to transfer cash from a commercial to a BPR account and again from BPR account to commercial bank account ? Or is this all done in cash at the BPR counter ?

Thanks.
Max

our investment on properties is not all fruitful - in fact, two of them is really suck.
A condotel in Bali - operated and managed by International well known hotel chain only return less han 1% a year.
We and other investor hire a lawyer to get our money back.

Other, a plantation estate in west java - after more than 5 years, totally nothing, no single cents return- even the land certificates is not ready.
Again, we are trying to get our money back. They promise to retiurn our money this month. Let see.

Yeah, those returns on (part) ownership of hotels etc. can really suck. And they promise you the world...

About BPR; that is rural. Which is an explanation why you'd not find so many in Jakarta. I don't think anybody can mention three by heart, let alone make a top 5.

Just stick it in government bonds through hsbc. Get up to 8/9% p.a on IDR. Nice and safe. Even the new ones paying over 7%

That's not what he had if you read. He invested through an insurance company

I did not talk about bonds. By mentioning Government and giving the link I pointed out the current mess in many Indonesian governmental institutions. And -what this thread is about- if you invest there you see a 'nice' example how it can go wrong....

Talking specifically about bonds, this is the mantra an investor should have: Government bonds of financial stable countries can be seen as having no risks yes.

But don't forget that a government can take certain measures which are risky. Generally speaking, the debt of developing countries carries greater risk since they can decide to raise taxes or print money to repay their debt.

Yes I understood that but I thought you were implying that the bonds I have are risky by posting the story about the guy who lost money through a financial advisor / insurance company like all those dodgy ones in Dubai, boiler rooms, etc etc
I have ORI11 through HSBC for what it's worth

Hi Max,
Welcome to the forum.

There are dozens of BPR in Jakarta, some bigger than others and having multiple branches. I don't live in JKT and don't have a full list of them, albeit I believe there is one either on the BI or LPS website. Below is an excerpt of list that I found in a financial article

If you google "BPR Jakarta" I have no doubt that you would find find much more than the one in the above list. Just pick a few which are in your sector and visit them.

Many foreigners ignore their presence because they are rarely located where they usually go/gather. One shouldn't expect finding a BPR in a fancy shopping mall or fancy district. They are located where their target are: popular district.

3) How easy is it to transfer cash from a commercial to a BPR account and again from BPR account to commercial bank account ? Or is this all done in cash at the BPR counter ?
I am very old school. I cancelled all my credit cards the day I stopped travelling intensively and I settle most of my expenses cash. I transfer money only when I can't do otherwise.

Despite the fact that that I could probably transfer the money to my BPR account, whenever I want to do a financial operation, I WA the branch manager of the BPR I need to deal with and s/he sends someone to collect or bring me the cash.

Paperwork are signed here in my office and, if it's about opening a term deposit, they bring me the bilyet afterward a couple of days or so after. No urgency anyway.

I wish you, that after some time of a fruitful collaboration with a BPR, you reach the level of service and confidence the two BPR I bank with offer me. It just never ceases to amaze me. Over my years here I have been a premium account holder in BCA, Mandiri and a couple of minor bank umum but NONE offered me the flexibility my city BPRs offer me. One of them is called BPR Prima Esa and I still have a bilyet from them with the number 11 (meaning it was the 11th term deposit they were accepting, it was shortlv after they got created) and they have constantly rewarded my loyalty beyond any of my expectations.
