My husband and I are separating. My son and I will be moving into a small new BTN house. At the moment the house is finished but built without kitchen or perimeter walls so we can't move in but have been staying odd nights here and there, to allow me space. As per my husband's requirements I had metal frames put on the windows and metal security doors on over the front and back doors. I don't have the money to build up big walls and iron fences/gates around the front and back as the locals who are moving in are doing. However we still got robbed. Window was forced open, metal security grille was forced off the window. There was not much worth stealing, a TV with a dodgy picture, which I used to listen to music and a fan is all they took. They left DVD player and cds/dvds. I told my husband, if a thief wants to get in, they will despite all the metal on windows and doors and despite big walls etc. I was right. He says as a female bule, even a poor bule I am always going to be a target and I have a feeling he may be right.

My question is when we move in full time what if someone is trying to break in while we are there? How much am I allowed to do to protect me and my son. I don't want to keep a gun but is there anything else I can use as protection? Pepper spray, taser? Are they legal here? If so where can I get them? We have two small dogs, which may be some deterrent (the tukan who came to fix the ironwork today took off running from my cat sized dog), Although it is in a BTN, it is only partially finished and we are in the far back corner, with rice fields on 2 sides and no neighbours as yet anywhere close.

Thanks for any advice!

Sorry about your predicament.

Guns are a big no-no for sure.

I'm not sure of the legalities of having and using pepper spray or tasers. However, I do hope that the police would side with a single mother protecting her son. Especially considering how thieves are treated by both the public and the police while in custody.

Which part of Indonesia are you located in?

In that case, having the dogs is a first good step.

Over here (in JKT) they even pee their pants if they got to close to the fence. But obviously poison could get them far...

Sorry to hear about your situation btw.

Thank, yes. The house would be considered a "tiny house" anywhere else. the bedrooms are 2.4x3m, living room not much bigger, so no room for a big local dog. Many locals seem to not be anti dog when it comes to my little guys but some are afraid of them and yes, poison could be used to get pass them. I am hoping they will be enough of a deterrent, plus any new walls etc we can build. because of the earthquakes here last year, we have depleted all savings, sold everything I can, and still business is painfully quiet, so I cant finish the house at the moment but really need to be able to move in in the next few months in order to get my son in to a local SMP this year. I thought with all the ironwork we have put up already we would be ok to move in and do the rest later. Actually originally I just wanted a small wooden fence around the front and a garden. But now I see that is not going to work.

They normally say "make sure the protection of your house looks better / more difficult than that of the neighbors" but the bule factor makes that not very relevant over here.

I leave the dogs outside at night but I can imagine you don't want to do that with a small Pom or Chihuahua. I'm afraid weapons or so won't really help since then they are already too close.

Instead of fortifying everything, perhaps it makes sense to create a safe room effect. So use a very strong bedroom door with extra heavy hinges and locks. And there you could add some ironwork inside of the windows. It will save you quite some costs and you have a place where you're sure they at least can not reach you guys.

Get a wall up, before you spend on anything else- and get the top set with broken glass & razor/barbed wire.... not attractive , but effective.

Those guys can climb and jump, it's amazing.

Last time the guy used a coax cable coming from a First Media pole to bypass the glass on the wall. The cable was ripped loose. Something else that broke loose was hell, luckily. The dogs went bezerk, that woke me up.

That is what I told my husband. if they want to get in they will. The iron work on the windows didnt stop them. At our place in Kuta (Lombok) we have high walls behind with glass. We still got robbed a few years ago, over the walls no problem, stole a guests belongings through the window, which also had ironwork but they left their bag in front of the window.

Confused.... The index says there are 40 replies.... I only find a few. And thanks to those who have replied!

I think they are views. The count is up to 59 as I'm typing this.

I also agree that glass on top a wall is very easy to defeat. Just throw a blanket over the wall to go through safely?

The safe room is a great idea, especially if that's where you sleep with your son.

My son is 12 and has his own room. I plan to live in this house till he finishes SMP which he will start this year. Then I will move to a coastal village where I have friends.

Link does not work for me R Cameron. :/

That link is to a thread in The Cage to which you do not have access yet. Usually access to The Cage is given after 200 posts but considering your circumstances and the fact that the information could be useful to you, I'd be happy to grant you access now if you wish to.

That makes things slightly more complicated in regards to a safe room.

Maybe you could put up signs "beware of the dogs" and some fake cctv around the place?

Yes please. :)

Yes will do! Will also get door and window alarms. A guest I had last week is going to send me some dynabolts for the window screens, apparently they fix to the bricks and make them more secure.
