Hello im indonesian people

Hallo Mohammad Yusuf...
Sudah mandi?
That reminds me of when I was supervising a new set of recordings to go with the Indonesian language texts, "Beginning Indonesian Through Self-Instruction." (The old recordings were poor quality, so we were making improvements.) I had about 6 Indonesians, all very Javanese, working for me that I could schedule for sessions in the recording studio.

The people available did not always match the genders of the previous recordings, so if necessary I would change Kartono to Titi, Imas to Budi, or whatever worked given the mix of voices I had for any given day.

So there was one conversation that in the original included a male asking another male, "Sudah kawin, Mas?" I didn't have two males, I had one male and one female, so I changed the person being asked about their marital status to a female.

The Indonesians voicing the recordings never bothered to rehearse, they would just do cold readings of the text. So, while we were recording, the male Indonesian said to a female, "Sudah kawin, Mbak?"

And everyone in the recording studio (except me, who didn't get it at all) cracked up. With tears of laughter pouring out of their eyes, the Javanese finally managed to explain to me that in context, for the Javanese, that was more or less like saying, "hey girl, have you f**ked yet?"

I forget how we fixed it - maybe we put that recording off to another day, or changed the language to "sudah menikah?" - but I learned a good lesson that day. I don't think I've ever used "kawin" since, just to be safe.

Shortly followed by "what religion is your wife", and then it gets awkward, so I just tell them I'm not going to talk about religion because Indonesians get too sensitive about it.
Yes especially sadly some of them make a sudden light speed facial expression switch when they hear that I am a Catholic. Those cute smiles turn to poker faces following a few seconds of silence. (The moment of truth I assume) lol...

Me neither btw. I am not going to talk about religion too. This was just my experience to share.

Let's do it the Bluebird way

Where you from
How long you here
Do you speak bahasa
Are you married
Why not
Did you eat your lunch yet

BATS version
Where you from
Where you stay
How many night
What your salary
You forgot the most frequently asked question: " Do you have children?".
And if one says: "No".
The next question is: "Why not?".
And if one says: "I don't want children".
The next question is: "So, do you use condoms?"
Really happened a couple of times.

I guess because I'm a local catholic girl, the response from the foreign guys I dated was quite the opposite.

Like I said, Indonesian language lacks the word for privacy.

I love children. Especially roasted with some gravy. Enak
I enjoy chicken, and to some extent, children if they are cute and well-behaved. However, for me, Balinese babi guling (hog roast) and seafood are "lebih enak" (more delicious).

Fresh, abundant, and cheap...
