Expatriate Cross-Cultural Adjustment Research Survey

Yes, a 5-point Likert scale is better than a 10-point Likert scale. It is easier for the respondents to give a clear answer, because on a 10-point scale the difference between score 8 versus 10 is difficult for the respondents to say.

However, in order to use a Likert scale, researchers need a clear definition of the research purpose.
The purpose of the research must then be decomposed – let's say – into dimensions that can be measured with these Likert scales. For example, the goal is to ask: "What are the functions of the human resources department and how good are they at them?" One of those dimensions is: 'How well does HR support my career goals?'

Looking at the title of the OP (Hongxin), it seems like it's not clear what the purpose is. So that would be the first priority: clearly define the purpose of this research.
Can you elaborate on how it is not clear? Maybe I phrase it wrongly, or maybe my questions are not clear enough.

Good luck on your thesis.

What I often found is that thesis are so anchored to their academic requirements that they are often completely disconnected from reality, with complex titles and variables that are not always relevant or practical. It's not easy to find the right balance.
Thankyou! I will try my best.

If you don't understand what I am saying here, then I fear that you may not be ready for your research.
Every research starts with a clear definition of what you want to research, for example "which factors determine the success of an expat?" Ask Chat-JPT or Co-pilot Windows for help, it will start with the question: What do you want to research?

Hi Samoerai, this is Hongxin's thesis partner, I am going to help him answer the question. Basically, we want to focus on assistance that expatriate received from local employees during expatriate assignment in Indonesia and whether it helps in adjustment process. But due to academic requirements, we have to include a minimum number of 4 variables/factors, hence the inclusion of organizational support and international experience.

Based on extensive research on the topic it is clear that organizational support and international experience helps with the process of cross-cultural adjustment, our focus is that whether support from local employees would strenghten those relationship :D

True :( we have to somewhat make our topic 'unique' due to years of extensive research, it is hard to find a topic that is underexplored.

I see.

So the dimensions/factors, which can be quantified by the Likert scale, are:
1. Organizational support
2. International experience
3. Support from local employees

And the question is whether these factors would help an expatriate in cross-cultural adjustment.

Yes, but we are focusing on whether social support, especially from local employees. Research has starting to prove that it is essential, but it is underpracticed, at least from information that we gathered :D

Also, initially our research scope is limited to technology sector and in one city, but we failed to reach the minimum required sample size. So, posting the survey in forums is our last resort :'D. So, thank you so much for for your time in reading and filling the survey!

I understand.

Would an assigned Indonesian mentor or assistant also fall under the definition of 'social support from employees'?

I got to 'gender' and stopped.
There are two genders, male and female.
If you think there are more than two (outside genetic abnormalities in southern Africa), you need to restart TK A.
