Hi everyone, my name is Darren, a student from BINUS University. Me and my partner are currently doing our undergraduate thesis titled "The Moderating Impact of Host Country Nationals Social Support on Perceived Organizational Support and International Experience towards Expatriate Adjustment: The Case of Expatriates in Indonesia".

The purpose of this study is to contribute to the expatriate adjustment literature and to provide recommendations to multinational companies for effective international human resources management practices.

We strictly emphasize privacy and anonymity in this survey.

We are aware of the previous forum by another person and what happened to it. That is why we will keep mannerism and respect in this discussion.

Feel free to give feedback, questions, and opinion, as we are doing our very first thesis using survey method.

Thankyou for your participation!

Hahaha, we must fulfill the required amount of variables :)

That's what I thought when I seen it. Imaging a form asking for the title and you have to enter it in a box. Even abbreviated with first letters would fail.

I have never worked for a company where I was an expat.

If you guys have a better phrases of words in mind regarding the title or survey, feel free to put in the reply. It may help improve my thesis process. Thanks 🙏

" Expatriates in Indonesia". would do the job nicely then you could have your extended title in smaller print as a sub heading as is often done with book titles.

So, is it something like this? =

Expatriates in Indonesia
The impact of Social Support on Perceived Organizational Support and International Experience towards the Adjustment of Expatriates in Indonesia

Yes, I think that looks better. What do you think?

impact of Social Support on Perceived Organizational Support

I have no idea what that could mean. If the word ‘on’ would be ‘or’ or even ‘within’ it already would make more sense.

And ‘international experience’; does that mean experience with expats? Or experience from expats? And how can you have experience ‘towards’ something?

Hmm, what i meant was that if an expatriate have support from organization (perceived) supported by good social support from host country nationals, they would have easier time adjusting.

I tried to change 'on' to 'or' and 'within', but it just didn't sync with me.

For the international experience, it is the experience that an expat has before (international assignment/travel).

It does look more clean and tidy, but sadly i think subheading is not allowed for my thesis title :(
Okay. You might still go for the heading, " Expatriates in Indonesia" and then begin with, "The purpose of this study is to examine The Moderating Impact of Host Country Nationals Social Support on Perceived Organizational Support and International Experience towards Expatriate Adjustment: The Case of Expatriates in Indonesia".

Anyway, as I am not quite sure of the context or the formalities that are imposed on your work I will refrain from any further remarks other than to say, good luck.

I will try to consult with my lecturer using your suggested title first. I hope it is allowed.

Thanks for your input. It means a lot on my first thesis.

You are using a Likert scale. Very good!
A Likert scale can be an attractive research method to use in a survey. But like any other research method, this scale has advantages and disadvantages. It produces quantitative research results that are easy to analyze. But respondents are limited in their answer options, which means you get fewer results than with a survey with open questions.

Hmm, you prefer that Strongly Agree -> Strongly Disagree from Likert? I always have some issues with that.

Yes, a 5-point Likert scale is better than a 10-point Likert scale. It is easier for the respondents to give a clear answer, because on a 10-point scale the difference between score 8 versus 10 is difficult for the respondents to say.

However, in order to use a Likert scale, researchers need a clear definition of the research purpose.
The purpose of the research must then be decomposed – let's say – into dimensions that can be measured with these Likert scales. For example, the goal is to ask: "What are the functions of the human resources department and how good are they at them?" One of those dimensions is: 'How well does HR support my career goals?'

Looking at the title of the OP (Hongxin), it seems like it's not clear what the purpose is. So that would be the first priority: clearly define the purpose of this research.

Good luck on your thesis.

What I often found is that thesis are so anchored to their academic requirements that they are often completely disconnected from reality, with complex titles and variables that are not always relevant or practical. It's not easy to find the right balance.

Yes. This is a quantitative type of survey. Therefore, I use Likert scale. But it comes down to the participants regarding the engagement.
