I think people tend to paint all of Indonesia with the same brush, but different regions have different customs. For example, I have lived in the Jakarta area for 13 years and have never seen a meal in which only the men ate as described in the blog post above. My experience in the country is mostly limited to Jabodetabek, Bandung, Bali, etc, so I cannot speak to how things go in NTB, NTT, Sulawesi, etc.

That was her experience at least once. The opposite (men and women eating together at gatherings) has been my experience many times in Indonesia, Singapore and Malaysia for the past 40 years or so. If I have to generalize, I'll go with my experience.

My experiences have been that men and women eat at the same time. At gatherings it is more common to see the wife get the plate of food for the husband but I think that is more to expedite the line and she controls how much he eats. She will also get the plates for the younger kids so maybe someone will come by this post and explain how the mother is submissive to the children.

As for the subject matter of this thread, various ministers including Sandiaga who was doing his best to justify it 2 days ago are now coming out saying the tax needs to be stopped. They have been getting an ear full primarily from Bali entertainment related people.

That is a ridiculous article. I don't think the ladies there need some Karen who has spent 5 minutes in Indonesia to tell them how to live.

And while we are at the subject, why discuss "corruption" and "politics" or the loudness of the mosques. Not your country. Not our business.

Loudness of the mosque is not a problem here, I would never live where it is.
Corruption.... after 30 years in various Asian countries I learned to live with it, specially as it very seldom concerns me.

The women who had graciously served this food sat on the other side of the room, watching their husbands, brothers or Neighbors eat and quieting their own bellies with nothing more than gritty coffee. This custom, possibly shaped by religious influences and beliefs, continues to persist in remote villages to some degrees in Indonesia, particularly during celebrations, marriages, village gatherings, and similar events. Also keep in mind women are good in cooking and preparing meals and the party could last for the whole day or even a few days. In the village life they do not use house helpers "pembantu", nanny, baby sitters.

However, when it comes to widespread application, particularly in major cities, it's evident that this custom and tradition are not consistently upheld. Simply visit any kind of eatery, restaurant, warung, rumah makan, or even small roadside eateries, and you'll observe that family members and friends lunch, dine together at the same table, irrespectively of their genders. The same holds true when receiving invitations for lunch or dinner in a host own home, especially from female friends.

Certainly, nobody likes living a stressful life. However, what if taxes on beverages, premium wine, bollies, or other alcoholic drinks are increased or even prohibited?
What if there's a substantial rise in taxes or a potential ban on "babi" (pork)? Could people keep smiling and have a beer ?? Well, people could certainly keep smiling, but instead of having beer, they will have fizzy drink instead.

You could no longer enjoy food containing pork like, babi guling in Bali, or for western food such as Pork Blanquette, Schnitzel, cordon bleu, steaks, Pork Stew, and various cuisines featuring ham and bacon, pork sausages. You could no longer enjoy a full english Breakfast. Less option for Chinese, East Asian cuisines.

And, the worst might still come, if Shariah law is enforced nationwide in Indonesia, you'll observe individuals being publicly stoned to death for committing adultery, and their hands being chopped for theft. Strangely, engaging in corruption, stealing, and cultivating cannabis, opium for export may be deemed acceptable, similar to what you see happening in Afghanistan. Keep in mind there are still people want this to be implemented in Indonesia.

I can't speak for Balifrog but there are many places in the world to relocate to if I no longer feel welcome here. I am a guest after all. It woudn't be any harder to move somewhere else than when I moved here. But they will have their own pluses and minuses. Yet to find the perfect place with no compromises.

Indeed, this is a sensible option. However, if you marry an Indonesian and have children, this option becomes more challenging.

I'm married to an Indonesian. Absoulte (and I mean absoulte) worst case go to the US for a couple of years, get her citizenship and go from there. At my age children aren't in the mix but still wouldn't change a lot if they were. The children would be easier than her to get citizenship. Then we start from the top again. Personally, I don't see the need for all of that though unless something crazy happened. I am perfectly happy here and I don't see that changing. If it does, see above for Plan B.
