Indonesian militants planned to detonate a radioactive dirty bomb, security sources said, highlighting the rising ambitions of extremists to wreak destruction in the world's largest Muslim-majority nation.

But experts cast doubt on their expertise, equipment and chances of success.

The plot was foiled when police raided homes and arrested five suspects in Bandung, West Java, last week, the sources with direct knowledge of the plot said. After the raids, police spoke of a plan to explode a "chemical" bomb but provided no other details.

Damn, a little close to home and certainly with their level of "expertise"...

Jeepers!
& a bit closer to home for me.
The whole idea of cooking it in a microwave is somewhat ludicrous surely.

If they put it in a microwave they would all be suffering a very painful death due to what they would ingest just from the fumes. It takes 1.6 tons of Thorium 232 to make 8 Kilo of U-233 or enough for an nuclear bomb. Sure, they would never actually make a nuclear bomb but how much Thorium 232 did they have. It sounds to me that the explosive itself was going to be the thing doing the damage mainly. I doubt if they really had the technological know how to pull off a dirty bomb. The shielding alone to process this stuff needs to be state of the art and thick as hell. Maybe if they were trying they were just killing themselves.

Again, more that went through the used to be an activist/fighter training and went on to bigger destruction plans.

It is worrying that they can get their hands on the ingredients & make a how to construct a bomb guide for dummies.

Not surprising, but worrying all the same. World's going mad- hubby chipped in with he hopes the cops shot them dead.

Interesting point of note: I cannot find any local articles in bhs Indonesia about this.
I do like to keep up with reuter's wire though. It tends to just publish news & not opinions.

Re Bandung:
I wonder if the powers that be are keeping a lid on it? (or would the lid only apply to pressure cooker bombs?):painkiller:

Fortunately so far these weirdos here seem pretty inep, let's hope they stay that way
It appears anyone shouting Allahu Akbar in Europe is immediately shot dead, seems like a good idea

Scary times in Indonesia , this of course is a product of IS getting a severe "ass kicking" elsewhere , unfortunately I can only see an increase in their efforts to kill and maim around the world ,.

Yes hopefully they remain largely inept at killing people and the police remain on top of them. They did manage to kill quite a few in Bali but that was 15 or 16 years ago.
