Customs Declaration (exemptions/duties) - Are things changing?

Accompanied means the bags are on the same flight as you.

Unaccompanied means you laid for extra bags to go on a different flight to you.

how bizarre... would anyone do that & if so why would they fill it in on the form.
Its a bit like asking have you posted anything to this country recently.

For the past 16 years, all checked bags leaving the US have been required to accompany their passenger... I thought the IATA had internationalized the regulation as well, which would imply that the customs document is rather outdated regarding these quantities.
FWIW, I always thought "accompanied bags" = carry-on; "unaccompanied bags" = checked (on same aircraft).

When I returned from Perth and parked up at the exciting new terminal 3, I walked miles to be met by two totally disinterested customs men who collected my customs form, collected my bag, I didn't really see an X-ray machine, it all seemed totally relaxed

Blacks Law Dictionary of unaccompanied baggage.....A passenger's baggage that is sent separately as cargo and not as accompanied baggage.
MacMillans Dictionary....
Accompanied baggage........bags or suitcases belonging to a passenger who is travelling in the same plane
Unaccompanied baggage... bags, suitcases etc are sent somewhere on a train or plane without their owner.

Very often passengers shipped their excess baggage as unaccompanied to reduce the cost. This was sent as cargo, and can be picked up later, but was declared on the inbound customs form to reduce administration of having to make a separate customs declaration.
This procedure goes way back before the security requirement of checked baggage having to be on the same aircraft as the passenger. I'm not sure if this feature is still available

Oops, i started something now... the whole point (as being played out above) is that ist is not clear what they are on about.
So I always stick a zero in.. what they going to do to me for filling in a form wrong, shoot me? (erm forget I asked that haha, stranger things have happened.

If all the bags you have are on the same aircraft as you are flying (checked and carry-on) then a zero in the Unaccompanied Baggage slot is the correct response.

If some bags, parcels, boxes etc. are arriving later then a number in the Unaccompanied Baggage slot is the correct response and a declaration of the items should added on the back of the form. After checking the form Customs make a copy so the items can be retreived from another area when it arrives....either a special place or the cargo terminal, depends on the airport.

BTW this is not unique to Indonesia...many countries have similar requirements.

The US also requires a transit visa....

Noir everything the US does is internationalised.

But I think you can send unaccompanied luggage in us.... you just dont check it. That's kinda the whole point

On the subject, I arrived into Jakarta last night at a time where there are at least 5 wide-body's landing within 30 minutes of each other, from doors open till in the car took me 10 minutes, a new personal best.

Customs was deserted, there was one guy collecting the forms but was just waving everyone straight through. Most of the people looked like obvious tourists, so it seems they aren't being hassled too much, or at least they weren't last night

Well, it's actually been a while since we've attended. It was a small group that met in a Holiday Inn conference room, and connected with the GBI (International Bethany Church). I'm not sure they are still together, but if so have moved to another place.

I'll take that as a pretty good sign that nothing notable has really changed since the last visit almost a year ago. I'll be passing through there in a couple more months as well. I'll be sure to report on my airport customs experience in Jakarta at that time.

That was the end of that event, and with minor exceptions, I've never taken anything again for anyone since that time.

True, I do allow small things, and always tell em I have the right to open it up and inspect it, and that I promise fair effort to bring it over but am not responsible if its lost, stolen, taxed or damaged regardless of whos fault caused it. Don't like it, ask someone else.

I never really get what they mean by accompanied bags & unaccompanied bags... If I am there filling in the form surely I am accompanying the bags- so I always put 0
Then I start thinking do they mean bags in the cabin vs bags in the hold... just seems silly.

& I always put 0 for family members travelling with me lol.
I recall decades ago (i was 15) going into UK from Tunisia, my aunt was with us & had 1 extra bottle of booze- my dad had filled my bag with a few bottles of booze ( I didn't know) & I had already gone through.
She got stopped & told them she was travelling with my mum & dad- so they got stopped - I was sat ages in the car park waiting.
Dad was furious at her for grassing up that she was travelling with them but they all forgot to mention me
So I guess the "number of family members travelling with you" bit is just to facilitate grabbing others in the group if you happen to have a miscalculation on quantities.

Ya, my family's SOP when traveling togather, is we start to stagger abit when at the customs xray, and keep walking if one member is called. Wait a safe distance but within view. When one is checked, a whole attached group is usually checked.

I apologize ahead of time for getting off topic and not Indonesia specific but................. I was at a tour of a local Fort where they traded furs with the Aboriginals. I guess during the time beaver pelts were the primary currency. Speaking of immigration they indicated there were primarily French, English and Scottish living at the Fort and that the managers were all Scottish. This had me thinking I remember hearing, on this thread, someone of Scottish origin who immigrated to Canada. Anyways I thought I wonder if it was...........who immigrated and worked as a manager. Hmmmmm I know that he is getting up there in age. Ahhh probably not as this was around 1852.

Hehehe...I got the nice message Daniel (Post # 54) and also thought the same as nd_eric...but..... talking about being drunk and also recognising zavia's post....
....last time I staggered a bit when at a Customs X ray they accused me of bringing in too much alcohol. I showed them my 1 litre bottle but he said..."whats in your belly?" I quickly sobered as I recall they can scan the body for internal drugs...I wouldn't want them to see the gallon of vodka-tonic I'd ingested courtesy of business class....[/QUOTE]
