Buying new bike in someone else's name

The culture here, that I have seen tends towards the person at fault handing over a chunk of red notes and it being over and done with.

Agree. The only problem is my skin color automatically puts me ‘at fault’ in whatever situation. And -even when clearly not in fault- having pity makes it we practically always pay to compensate the damage, material and/or physical.

The amount of hit & runs are crazy (in Jakarta), but I have the feeling having insurance won’t really change that.

Ouch! You say just because of your skin color, it puts you at fault! Does that make you feel welcome here? Do you feel sometimes, that you are seen, just as a walking ATM? I understand what you mean, in having pity of the people that call this place home!
But really, Is it a foreigners fault, that the life here, is like it is? Yes, I come from a more prosperous country also, but I didn't ask for the life I was given! When I was young, I worked odd jobs, that payed little money. I couldn't afford a college education, but I worked hard, and made enough money to have a decent life! I became a farmer, and grew most of my own food. In my country, I am considered a lower income person! No Lobster,Caviar, Oysters, or Foie Gras! But I still had the desire to travel, so I came to SE Asia, to experience life with the Buddhist, Hindu, Muslim, Etc.
I saw that the small amount of money I had, was more than what these people had, so I helped some and bought them things to improve their lives!

But I also realized, that it was not my fault these people's lives, are like they are! It is up to them to elect the right Government, pay their taxes, help each other also, work hard! Just because they go to their Temples, and Pray! Doesn't mean that their prayers will be answered! You have to live the right way, and give the best you can!
I know some will say, it's because the rich nations, are taking advantage of these people, and their resources, but these Nations are also responsible for their situation! You cannot deny the Greed and Corruption here!
I don't want their Gold, Tin, Palm Oil, Tigers, or Orangutans! I just want to experience their beautiful lands, and cultures! And along the way, help them as much as I can! I don't mean to offend anyone in what I say!

Very righteous,, and here you are in Indonesia with the rest of us "because of the culture" yes of course and of course because $1,000 here goes further than in HK, Thailand, even Philippines (the irony now that Bali is 3x the price of Jakarta)

Talking about corruption but doesn't even want to get a licence to ride a bike, because you are a bule and get away with it by bribing the police if you get stopped

Just curious why the drama about the licence - it takes less than an hour and you don't seem like you are rushed off your feet with your 9-5 job?

Surely one of the easiest things to do here as a foreigner is to at least follow the basic laws and rules about visas, licenses etc. Then you can't complain about corruption later

I don't own a bike and I don't want to - I use grab car although I have owned several cars here for GF's etc but for me easier to press a button to go from A to B and fee is all inclusive and no drama about extra fees or crashes or tolls or parking or insurance etc - in fact I have a different car every day!

I had owned a few motors here and adapted to the Indonesian style of driving while keeping my defensive driving thoughts in mind. I had bot A and C licenses gained legally. Very little time taken.

The thing here is you need to use all your senses to drive here and your sight is primary since you have to see everything in front of you and to your side. 10 things to watch and have some ideas that if this happens you do this. I have always said that if my eyesight were to diminish, I would just stop driving. That is what happened and I stopped. Never lost a single Rupiah on my motor purchases since I bought new every year. Sold at buying price.

People always say, buy a car, get a driver. (Say buy a house too. That's another story.) With the cost of a car I figure 15 years+ of using Grab/Go cars and they come with drivers and I don't pay for maintenance or fuel. We take 3:to 4 round trips in town a week. Once in a great while we do the 12 hour thing but make our own deals with drivers. Average around 600 rebu all included.

people dealing with wrong people. Whoever is seeking for problems will find them for sure.
This.
Wife and I have owned at the very least 40 vehicles over the past 25 years. Probably more. I think that 4 or 5 have been owned under my name, perhaps a bit more under my wife's name. The rest? Some family, others not family, some people we knew, others people we did not even knew but had been owners of the vehicle at a time. Private cars, rental cars, motorbikes, trucks, pick ups, mikrolets...etc I think that most thing with some kind of wheels, we have had a BPKB for. Never had a problem with any of them to buy or sale, to renew STNK, to pay taxes... etc, However for each vehicles we always had the original BPKB, the valid STNK with taxes up to date... and several copies of the KTP of whoever was on the documents.
