BPJS as foreigner with no work??

Hello everybody,

I just wanna make it short:

Iam German my wife is Indonesian and we have one child, we are married since 2010. Iam 35 years old and we moved to Batam and stay permanent. No big problems so far.

We don't work because my inheritance is enough for the next couple of years.

First BPJS said I can join after 6 months. Another worker said I can join directly, he even made a call to make sure it is possible.
Now suddenly they say my wife and my child can join, because they are Indonesian but I cannot join because as a foreigner you HAVE TO work to join. I don't wanna ramble too much now.

My question is: does anyone here have the same or any experience with that problem and is it really true?
As usual in Indonesia you can never be sure, cause not matter where u go ( government place, bank, insurance, notaris) , every worker seems to have their own facts about the law. Often you get 4 different answers from the same place.

Thanks for the help,

Marius

I can not say for sure any longer since they do seem to change things rather often.

I know when I signed up a couple years ago I had no problems. Used it once with no problems. I do not work an on KITAP and have KTP.

On the application there was a line to enter KITAP or KITAS number.

Those on Retirement Visas are not allowed to join.

I have heard but have not confirmed that foreigners not working are no longer eligible.

They have a web sight and I believe you can ask questions there. If your reply is suitable, take it with you to your BPJS office.

One thing that is a given. Here many workers in offices outside Jakarta wait a long time for regulation changes to come thew. Many then fail to have the new regs presented to them so they go unread or completely unnoticed. Best to get info from main office and go from there.

Hello,

First I want to say sorry, I was too stupid to see that there is already a very similar thread.

So if the admin wants to delete this one it is ok.

Thanks for the answer! I think actually that is the best advice right now. We try to get our fitting answer now hahaha

Hello again,

So what I found out so far by talking with the BPJS workers in Instagram and by reading these new rules that came out end of octber - It is no longer possible without work. Well at least for now. In Indonesia everything can change in a minute, so I hope for the best.

So what would happen with those not working who currently do have it? Will there be a phasing out? Cancellation? Can they keep it?

Good question, as I recently (September) signed on as with it and they took 1 payment, but I don't have my card yet... hmmm

Hi,

so far from what we have been told and read it seems like as a foreigner you only can get it if you already work/worked for 6 months in Indonesia. We still have to figure out the details. We are also new to that, so Iam really sorry that I can't really answer your questions. I hope to find out all the details soon.
(For now I heard most people say the ones who already have , can keep it. How official that is I can't really
Say?)

It seems like this decision is not too old. Cause ya, a few weeks ago it seemed possible, but we still didn't have my wife's new KK, so we couldn't apply.

Ps: although all of this does not make much sense since BPJS Kesehatan is for people with no work. I guess the simple reason is they don't have any benefit from it and already have a big deficit. Thats also what one of the workers said to us in private, they don't have any benefit from it. So they try to keep foreigners out of it. For obvious reasons they can't keep citizens out of it.
Well, Indonesia still has a long road ahead.

Hi,

since Iam at it, there is another update just these days.
I managed to get into BPJS Kesehatan. I got my Kitap so I was able to get into my wifes KK and got myself a KTP and they accepted it.
Anyway, I heard other cases where it didn't work. As often in Indonesia, I guess it depends on the place and the persons you are dealing with.

I didn't know that you could get a foreigner onto an Indonesian's KK. I kinda assumed the male was default Kepala Keluarga as well, but then it would have to be your KK, maybe? Guess I know less than I though about KKs. Interesting. Then again, as someone once said, "often in Indonesia, I guess it depends on the place and the persons you are dealing with."

I remember I was on the family KK for a while, and then they put me on a separate one. Or it could be the other way round. Anyway, it is very useful to know that I could get a BPJS with my KITAP despite not being employed in Indonesia. I might try that at some point.

Iam also not so sure about the rules, I should ask my wife about it later. Through all the stuff we had to do here she has gained a lot of knowledge on that stuff 😂😂
Maybe it has something to do with me being sponsored by her. Anyway..i will ask and tell you later.

I also could have gotten my own KK. Some people told us for BPJS it is better to be on a family KK. I don't know, things are never 100% for sure here.😅.
It is good to have BPJS for bigger problems. I don't plan to exploit it. For normal cases I go to a nice old chinese general doctor, he knows our whole family and my wife was still a teen when he started his klink. He isn't even in the BPJS program, so I pay all the bills myself.
For a major illness or if you need a surgery it is different though. You might go bankrupt at some point haha.

I asked my wife, she said not everyone knows that you can get in your indonesian wife's KK and they don't really inform you about it. Then again, there is also no rule against it. Only in that case you can't become the head of the family.

Yes this is correct, I've been on my wife's KK since I got my first KITAS & it says she is the head of the family which is fine by me, fits the covert narcissism nicely........:LOL:

UPDATE:

Seems like the worker who accepted it made a mistake. The newest part of this story is actually back to the beginning.

Due to some wishy washy rules that can be interpreted in several ways it seem, it is not possible for me to join BPJS Mandiri.

No matter what my status is, as long as I DONT WORK or don't have the citizenship it is not possible anymore to join. At least that is the position of the BPJS office in Batam. There are always different statements depending on who you talk with. From A to B, then Back to A and then A says C and C sends you back to A.😂.

Well it seems like there isn't much we can do about it. It would be possible if my wife would work and I could join her BPJS then cause it would be provided by the company. We both don't work these days, so only my wife and daughter can join since they have the citizenship.

It doesn't really bother me, I could understand both things. It is normal for me if a country says we protect the whole family if one is married to a foreigner. Then I can also understand countrys like Indonesia who say we already have a big deficit, why should we give a cheap insurance for "rich" foreigners who don't work, no matter what their status is.
Only ya, it's strange that some offices sometimes still allow it and others not. Then again, it is Indonesia.

Ps: I updated this a bit late cause in the last few weeks we were still in the process of finding out what the problems are and figuring out a solution, but it seems like there is none. Except when rules someday change again or become more clear.

I have BPJS however I have never used it to date. Mainly because I am too lazy & have found it easier to dash off to the hospital & deal direct with the place I like.
I have had one or two hospital visits & to be fair I have found overall the care to be reasonably decent (apart from 1 disastrous time where the guy really seemed to be clueless), my point being- a visit with a specialist costs about 200,000 IDR - A visit with a lower rank Dr costs less.
A cardiogram wasn't overly expensive, x rays aren't that bad either about 600,000 to 1 million idr.
So, don't panic too much, unless you get severely sick or have a devastating accident you will likely be able to scrape together the cash for immediate care.
