Revert to supercharged piston engines. I like sound they make.

I’m sure Davita might have some idea, so as it gets hot air density is less and high altitude airports will suffer, but can the newer jet engines cope

Not to mention its effect on the dead man's curve

Anglian has made an excellent point but it isn't new. Airlines and manufacturers have wrestled with hot/high airfield issues for decades.
A typical example was BOAC building the VC10 for the hot/high airfields it operated from Africa. It was the only aircraft able to T.O. during the day out of Nairobi.
The downside is the aircraft, due to its design, may not be very efficient in other theaters of the world...it is all a compromise.

wiki....Sir Giles Guthrie, who took charge of BOAC in 1964, preferred Boeing aircraft for economic reasons, and indeed BOAC began turning a profit in the late 1960s. After a row in Parliament the government instructed BOAC to purchase 17 Vickers VC10 aircraft from a 30-aircraft order which Guthrie had cancelled. The Standard VC10 had higher operating costs than the 707, largely due to BOAC's requirement at the design stage for the aircraft to have excellent hot and high performance for Commonwealth (African/Asian) routes, but the larger Super VC10 was a success with American passengers on the North Atlantic and was profitable.

Interesting about the VC10c I’m told that part of a later Boeing order replacing the aged VC10s, that it was a requirement the Remaing 3 that were parked be destroyed,
Also a freeing of mine had to do a full power engine run, the apprentice working with him wanted to be outside on the headset, the apprentice was instructed to go nowhere down the rear end of the aircraft, during the run there was a very large bang, the engine had surged, my pal immediately pulled back on the throttle and shut down, calling up on the headset to the apprentice, no respite, go outside and there is the apprentice lying on the ground, he had gone down the back to see the intakes, at high power it had sucked him in, a hight I’m sure of about ten foot, luckily for the apprentice a rapid engine shut down, but as he hit the ground and broke his arm, no damage to the engine, get anyone get luckier

Have you guys watched The Last African Flying Boat? It couldn't take off from some lake and they had to take everything out of it and have a go.
High altitude + old engines.

Is there any advantage to arriving in Jakarta via Garuda vs any other airline?

Only in J or F, they do immigration on board I think, but otherwise no, you still have to go through the foreigner queue or kitas queue etc

And terminal 3 of course (not all internationals yet). Which you could consider an advantage or disadvantage. But if you have a connecting Garuda flight, it will obviously be better to arrive with Garuda.

The MH370 disappearance final report is out today. The families etc. have received a hard-copy and it will be posted on the web sometime this afternoon.
I'll be reading it and will offer my opinion when done...I hope others can do the same.
I'm sure by tomorrow experts will chime in to critique the report......so we will see.

update...the link to the PDF report is here but a warning...it's about 500 pages long

Wonder if Qatar, Etihad and KLM already moved?
.

My daughter is currently transit in muscat from London to jkt by Oman air, ETA tommorow afternoon at terminal 3.

I found this overview of airlines relocating to terminal 3. No idea if they all move(d) according to schedule.

Berikut adalah jadwal perpindahan maskapai. Mohon dicatat bisa jadi ada perubahan rencana, jadi sebelum terbang silakan cek website airlines masing-masing.

  • 9 April : Malaysia Airlines (MH)
  • 21 April : Turkish Airlines (TK)
  • 1 Mei : Thai Air (TG), Srilankan (UL)
  • 8 Mei : Oman Air (WY)
  • 11 Mei : Qantas (QF), Jetstar (JQ/3K)
  • 15 Mei : KLM (KL)
  • 20 Mei : Air China (CA)
  • 1 Juni : Philipine Airlines (PR)
  • 1 Juli : Emirates (EK), Asiana (OZ)

Well Singapore Airlines have definitely not moved and hopefully don't for a long time. No idea why they insist on rushing this when T3 is still not fully ready.

To answer an earlier question, yes KLM have moved. For KLM there is some advantage as they are on Sky Team (with Garuda) so on business you get to bypass the queues a bit but for the Star Alliance passengers (like SQ) this doesn't happen. Also a comment to something earlier is that in T3 immigration is the same queue for everyone; Indonesian, kitas, foreigners etc, with the only exceptions being diplomats and Sky Team Priority. I have seen it very very busy and also seen it empty so its pot luck. There are electronic gates for Indonesians but based on previous experiences these will probably only work 10% of the time.

I just spoke with an EVA agent in Jakarta, and mentioned the 31 Juli move date to T3. They are definitely still in T2 for now. I asked when the move will actually take place, and she said there was no date or information yet. FWIW: she speculated that it would be at the end of the year or maybe early 2019.

This is actually a small matter of interest, as we always fly EVA into T2 and transfer to Garuda domestic in T3. We normally cram into the free shuttle bus, but maybe I'll try the inter-terminal train now that it's fully operational.

I assume our ANA-United flight on the 8th still departs from T2. Will certainly check, though. Probably more than once.

My daughter took more than an hour since the plane touch down until she get out the terminal, where most of the time was waiting baggage.

The nice thing, she got free upgrade to biz class from muscat to Jakarta.
This is the 4th time she get free upgrade to biz class, all for long haul flight.
The Oman air biz class seem very nice

I'm aware Steve is being sarcastic and it is amusing but, just in case anyone is interested I'll try a simple explanation.
Airways in the sky are like interstate roads but, instead of horizontal separation.....vertical separation is applied. This is much like a multi-tiered bridge where one- way traffic go on one level and the opposing traffic on another level.
The vertical airway will denote a FL (altitude) i.e. eastbound A/C will be assigned odd FL 290-410 in 2000 feet increments whilst westbound will fly at even FL 300-420. (290 means 29,000 feet)

Hope this helps.

except for China, which sensibly uses metres not feet...

What did you do for CX Davita? (or your wife) as it seems you have retiree flight bennies?
