Noticed that ACE Home Centers have decent selection of aquarium kits etc, but where are the proper aquarium shops hiding? When it comes to fish and plant selection nothing out of ordinary needed, just basic species.

Mrs says cat is a no-no, my allergy says dog is a no-no, so better put up a fish tank then! Had aquariums when I was kid / teenager, so have some experience, but not brave enough to go straight to reef tank either...

Reef tanks aren't as difficult as you think and it's really rewarding. Just make sure you have a good trickle filter with a high water turnover rate, a good protein skimmer and a UV sterilizer.

The only tricky thing is lighting if you want to keep corals and live rock. If you use tube lighting, you'd need to stuff around 5 tubes in the hood can be tricky. Therefore a metal halide pendant would be ideal.

If you have a nice reef aquarium in the living room, you'll never bother watching TV again.

If you buy one at ace expect to pay twice as much as a local pet store (at least in manado)

... and of course forgot to mention the location... South / East Jakarta area. Prefer proper aquarium / pet shop over ACE also because they have better info.

In Menteng behind Jl. Sudirman there is an area that has a large number of shops selling fish, supplies and equipment. I've never tried it myself but have heard you can also get stuff at Blok M.

Thanks! In Google Menteng and aquarium --> lots of good info.

jl. sumenep to be exact. You can get from a simple fresh water aquarium up to large marine aquarium complete with cooling system and titanium piping, and various fish, plant or corals selections.
I bought alligator gar, red paco, fire eel, elephant fish and other exotic fish there

Bought locally made 400 l tank that actually didn't get that much cheaper than ACE system, but got proper external filter (Eheim's XL1500 instead of some Chinese "two numbers too small" integrated filter) and lights...

Anyhow was thinking about the fish and the plants and the decoration... Local specialities or what, and then it hit me: whole island full of lava rock and also (ex) living rock --> Malawi cichlide tank! Perfect materials around and for cheap price!

Would have gone for one of the Eheim wet/dry models if it were me. ;)
Well the guy had it ready and it was love at 1st sight... Besides Chinese filters that he had in stock and that he provides with the tank were just too small for the job (tank 400 l and filter recommendation <185 l; he said it will be OK even for "2 meter tank" but then again locals keep even arwanas in 1 meter tanks...). Cost as much as the tank itself but hey, is an investment for mental peace!

Well good luck with the new aquarium. Be sure to post some pictures when it's all set up and stocked with fish :)
