Well this is not a good start to the new year, a boat going to 1000 isles catches fire, several people killed, its on Metro newsroom all in bahsa, not not following it too well, very sad really, but all too common here

The whole top of the boat is totally burned out, you would have to go over the side, most of the passengers appear to be old ladies and families,

172 people on board? No thank you. Overloading may not have caused a fire but it would certainly effect the outcome.

According to Reuters 250 people on the boat, how do they do it it, overloading, every time, typical indonesia, what rules

All the different news services are reporting different numbers. Anywhere from 170 to 250 people on board. 98 to 200 rescued, and 23 to 25 dead. Surrounded by water, how do all the passengers allow someone to burn to death. It is being reported charred bodies were removed from the boat. In all likelihood the dead are going to be drowning victims since most of these boats don't carry enough flotation devices to begin with. Then they overload the boats. Where are the personnel that are supposed to be watching over this industry?

The photos are horrifying. I wonder what the cause was - unsafe handling of fuel, maybe?

We have an Indian who is a college student in America staying with us for a couple of weeks to learn about Indonesia/development work. One of her plans is to visit Pulau Seribu. Since this is all over the international news (I found out about it through BBC), I've advised her to inform her parents that she was NOT on that boat.

I will always remember once I was in a fast boat in Indonesia, talking to some of the staffs asking how much was the capacity of the boat, I am not sure about the numbers, but he replied like this, the capacity is 150 but last week when there was holidays in Indonesia, the boat got 200 passengers and made two full trips instead of one, and he was saying this very proud and laugthing, like they were winning a battle or doing something amazing and great!! I was totally shock and still shock when I remember this moment. Left me without words.....
