Ahok's Blasphemy Trial Verdict - 9 May 2017

A reminder that the judges will give their verdict tomorrow 9 may 2017 in an auditorium at the Ministry of Agriculture in Pasar Minggu, South Jakarta.

Pro and Anti Ahok groups are planning to be present with fears of clashes high. 14,000 Police and Army personnel have been deployed for the occasion.

You would be well advised to avoid the area tomorrow and to keep an eye on the news for any trouble.

The deliberations started on Metro tv about 45 mins ago and I reckon, by the time all those judges get thru' reading their brief, the result will be delivered ...probably November..

Yes, there are 2 higher court levels: the appeal court and the cassation court. So there are still 2 chances to get a probation sentence or even a non-guilty sentence. But it could also go the other way.

I'm pissed off but then what were we expecting? A probation or non-guilty verdict? With those white garb assholes outside the court ready to riot? Giving ammunition to Jokowi's opposition to accuse him of "intervention" in the verdict? I guess this was the only play.

All we can hope now is that this is giving time for Jokowi to strengthen his position while increasing the financial burden of maintaining those demonstrations to his enemies.

Pretty sure any judges or member of judicial system in Indonesia can be found tainted if KPK takes a closer look. Mayhaps then the decision can be vacated? This should be a good time to clean up the judicial system if Jokowi has the will to do that.

I'm sure he has the will, just not enough political power/backing to arrange it. Plus it'll be slim pickings if you want non-tainted judges with experience.

Thanks E-G. I hope you are correct 'coz it's the only thing that makes sense in this whole circus. If the charges and judgement were not politically motivated and everyone believed they were sound, logical and based on justice, then this country is in a worse state than I imagined... and time for us to open plan B on our retirement living. Anyone want to buy an apartment in Jakarta??? j/k

By keeping the 'mob' quiet there will be a bigger mandate in the next Presidential and House elections in mid 2019. Maybe then that stupid religious law and the power and mentality of the 'extremist gangsters' will be replaced.

Blasphemy law is a true abomination everywhere in the world. Nothing good has ever come out of it and has always been (mis/purposely)used to shoot down political enemies. It's high time for international bodies like UN to declare blasphemy laws as antithesis of human rights and freedom of expression.
