Ahok's Blasphemy Trial Verdict - 9 May 2017

There have been protests all over the world for Ahok, from Vancouver to Sydney to SF to Amsterdam. This is probably the first time an Indonesian politician garners such outpouring of support internationally. Could he become a symbol of a movement such as Aung San Suu Kyi?

what are the ingredients needed for that ?

Constant attention of international media, NGOs and governments? Ahok needs a PR team to keep his story being repeated constantly around the world. A Nobel peace price would be very nice and definitely riles up the radical islamists.

There is a show of support around the world but at the same time you have some government leaders crying that they should stay out of Indonesia's business. Who will the citizens listen too?

The government did what they had to do: staying neutral, otherwise, pushing on the side of Ahok would cause chaos and massive rebellion from the other side. Those guys could play rough game there.

PR team for Ahok must act like "Teman Ahok"
They have to work independent. Government cant support them because there are lots of factions trying to pull the President down. So its up to you people, you are on your own

When you say government, which branch of government is that? According to my civics lessons, there are 3 branches of government. The judicial should interpret the law and remain impartial, ignoring all the politics. Even Ray Charles and Stevie Wonder can see that this isn't the case during the trial. If the judicial branch is not doing its job, then start special prosecutor or investigation.
If there is mass rebellion, then the executive part of the goverment should quell the masses. The easiest example is during the civil rights movement and desegragation in the States. The executive branch ordered the National Guards to enforce the law passed down from the other branches of the goverment, even though there are many parts of the country which didn't accept the decision.

How did the government stay neutral when they allowed the anti Ahok protest and hate speeches and cracked down on pro Ahok peaceful demonstrators. This stay out of it attitude is being carried a bit too far in my opinion. This president can't show taking sides but being one sided is showing he actually is. What happens if Ahok's conviction is overturned and the radicals hit the streets again?

Lets dissect a little bit and put spices on that

Parliament side : Those people hate Ahok, differences is just, one side show it, others deny it. A tiny factions that hopes he made it all to executive. We cant count on them

Judicial : Head of that is strongly fishy and connected to VP. Dont forget he is also the uncle of notorious gangster, La Nyalla Matali. Obvious isnt it ? Dont say it, whatever answer you have in mind would be denied once stated in public. But deep down, we all know that...

Executive : If Presiden sided with one faction, lets say common sense faction of Ahok, it would likely trigger the opposed factions to side with the J, thus it would be a step closer to Impeachment. Dont know how they'd do that but hey, Jakartans people are 70% satisfied with how their cities develop, yet Ahok lost by 10% votes

Its more complex that what it seems, but with Allan Nairn investigation and reports, I used to call it BS, its obvious which side the Army is in. . So Yes, Jokowi has to sacrificed Ahok. That way he could claim neutrality while at the same time, kick those radicalist out as well

BTW, does anyone knows Rizik side chick is pregnant ?

That is Neutral fastpitch
Neutral means, letting Ahok fall to Jail and do nothing about it. Cause radicals are supported by factions of those who wish to change the country to Khilafah/Shareea law. Lots of elements involved in it. Ahok supporters now is like The Mission Imposible team working in the episode "rogue state"....

Those behind radicals wont stop until the country turn to total chaos if government are against them

I'm curious to find out why he has withdrawn his appeal, other than the fact he could get more.
This still is pissing me off

If you noticed the trend, it's not purely justice in progress, it's political The winner side will keep on stomp him if he still fights back.....

Oh BTW, you know that the Old man VP is behind all of this ?

Ahok has withdrawn his appeal. Not sure what is up with that. Maybe wait for Prosecutions appeal or something else up their sleeves.

I don't think we will have the true reasons behind his decision, but Ahok is neither stupid nor naive enough to believe that, at the end, Justice may prevail. He knows that no judges would have the balls to downgrade the sentence against him if HE appeals.

I also believe that negotiations have occurred behind the curtain. After all, an admittance of wrongdoings by not appealing the guilty verdict, can only accelerate and facilitate his parole and, considering that "his life may be endangered in jail" most of his time may be done outside Cipinang or any Lapas.
At the end of the day I think it's a smart move which may see him out sooner than the two years sentence. It's also a smart move to appease the situation.

I agree with Atlantis post # 113.
This whole affair appears to me to be contrived. I just cannot accept that the President and Ahok are not colluding, behind the curtain, and looking for a typical Indonesian way to solve the issue and take Indonesia forward.
When Jokowi has the police, military and the responsible Muslim groups behind him, including people like Sri Mulyani with her tax-laws, there will eventually be some momentum to scare those traitors (I'm sure everyone knows who they are) to give-up this backstabbing or they will be dealt with.
The brain-washed demonstrators will also get a message when their leaders are seen for what they really are...crooks.

That's my hope...but I'm not convinced it will happen soon.

Maybe Ahok is taking a bite out of certain FPI leaders arguments they are being criminalized.

All day Metro TV is showing a speech from Ahok's wife...it is tear-jerking.
For those who were instrumental for this injustice they will know it is lebaran soon......and they'll have to atone.

I doubt ant atoning will be done since they believe they've done "right"

I'm told Australia post office has issued a stamp with Ahok on, can anyone confirm that
