At least three dead and dozens trapped after Indonesia school collapses

Deadly collapse of Islamic school Building in Indonesia

Another sad stories. This is what happens when profit is considered more important than safety (human life). It is also further evidence of the poor quality of some school buildings in Indonesia.

"Raden Abdus Salam Mujib, head of Al Khoziny School, said the prayer hall had just completed roof casting as part of a planned three-story expansion. He suspected the structure could not support the weight of the fresh concrete, triggering the collapse."

He was right.... should have thought about it a little earlier ?

Not surprised with the quality or lack of in most buildings throughout east Java . They've been doing renovations to one of the mosque's here where I live for the last 15 years , it's now 3 stories high with fancy domes etc etc . I'm sure the only thing holding it up is the bamboo scaffolding . Going by other buildings around the village it'll collapse on them when or soon after they remove the scaffolding . My front cement roofed terrace is starting to drop large patches of cement from where they just laid the steel reinforcement on the form work . With the humidity and salty environment the steel is rusting and expanding . I thought I'd hired one of the better builders in the region until this started to happen . 95% of tradesman are ex fisherman who think they know everything . They all call themselves architects , even the laborer's . Not one of them could understand the plans I drew up to Australian specifications.

Profit? It's most likely a lack of engineering input rather than greed in this case.

Possibly, if they are just asking the contractor to design and build the building because the owner want to save money. The contractor has tendency to use less and the cheapest materials that they could possibly use. If the owner do not hire an engineer to supervise during the construction phase, the contractor work will go uncheck. But from the the news it is not clear who design the building whether the Architect + Structural engineer or just the contractor to save money?

For a project of medium scale, proper practice would involve design by an architect and a structural engineering consultant, with an engineer supervising during the construction phase. This ensures that the contractor follows the agreed specifications throughout the process.

Many of the schoolchildren pulled from the rubble of the collapsed building will now need amputations. It’s heartbreaking, as these innocent children had no knowledge of the building’s structural flaws.

Also, the collapse of the building was not even caused by an earthquake but by poor construction, a man-made disaster, human greed.
