4/11, 25/11 and 2/12 anti-Ahok demonstrations

ISIS in Indonesia, look out... foreigners taking over

Nope. Istana is relatively quiet. Action at Muara Karang (Chinese area).

Cameraman and reporter are panicking now. See Metro TV.

The whole area there close to the Heaven Funeral Home; more Chinese you can not get. And now there are even rumors that demonstrators stop cars and ask to lower the windows. Also very sensitive of course is the fact that the apartment building with the rape history is rather close by in Pluit.

Seems to be under control again. Phew.

So....in two weeks, will Ahok take the fall? Guilty of so-called insulting islam? Or not guilty? If he's not guilty? Will there be another demo? Will there be usage of live ammo then??

There are many that feel he will be the fall guy just based on how people perceive the government caters to the hardliners. I hope that if they find him guilty that the people rise up and demonstrate with 100 thousand people. The hardliners don't care if he is found guilty or not. Their bankrollers just want him out of the election. This is a political move much more then a religious one and one of the few ways the police can become involved in politics.

No matter what happens, it will be a negative for Indonesia and will find a way to feed the radical groups. Any problems with rioting will be blamed on others and they will try to convey how saintly they are. Even though the instigators were on the FPI kambing wagon, they will say, not us and the government going by hustory will say, OK. Next time, even bigger and the day will come when Indonesia becomes a worthless nation under sharia.

This is Indonesia. The people don't interfere it seems no matter their beliefs. They have built a nation of sheep and these sheep will be led to slaughter together.

So it seems the riots were contained to the demonstration sites as well Penjaringan area in Pluit.

While the violence near the State Palace were between security forces and protesters (and apparently also among protesters, HMI vs FPI??), the violence in Pluit was by a different group. Some tried to enter Ahok's residential complex. Others attacked passing vehicles, seemingly targeting Indonesians of Chinese descent and looting mini-marts such as Indomaret and Alfamart. By midnight, the police claimed they had the situation under control. According to social media, the situation is back to normal in Pluit with roads and busways re-opened and people going about their business.

As far as I know, no other such violence has been reported throughout Jakarta.

In the mean time, it seems that some protesters moved to the Parliament building but it is not clear whether they are still there and if so how many.

Everyone around Jakarta, be safe, the tension is high and we never know what some bored youth will do once they realize that the Police force cannot possibly intervene everywhere at once.

And as some redditor said, just as the economy was starting to get better, with the tax amnesty and administrative reforms, they go and put on a shit show like this for the world to see. Clap, clap clap.

I can only echo what you've said. Very sad indeed. Everything in Manado seems ok which might not seem much to do with the events of last night but there are a lot of Chinese here and it's the only positive thing I can report without trivialising what happened in Jkt

Indonistan?

If the FPI, or whoever applied for yesterday’s rally permit, applies for permit again, hope the police will deny them as they have broken their promise to disperse by 6pm. They are supposed to be “men of religion” but they have no integrity, exactly the opposite. Note: It was Kapolda Metro who said that they have “broken their promise”. That’s too gentle. For me, they have no integrity, so they cannot be trusted to honor their words. If they had dispersed as agreed, then the rally would have ended peacefully.

Before the rally, they were calling for Ahok to be prosecuted. All of a sudden yesterday, they want Ahok to step down and be jailed. How can they ask for that? Ahok is NOT proven guilty yet, and besides, they are not Jakarta residents so Ahok is NOT their governor.

Next time, if they rally again (assuming the police permits them), I suggest all businesses to close, including all shopping malls, Indomaret and Alfamaret too.

I am not sure of all the damage that occurred last night. But it appears as far as riots reported on , around the world, it was fairly tame. One Alpha Mart and a few police vehicles. I have seen more damage then this after sporting events, where some people rioted. And there have been a few riots in the U.S. after a black man was shot by the police. The FPI and politics etc. is a whole other problem here. The more religion gets mixed with politics, probably not the best for the nation, or anyone. To my knowledge no Chinese were targeted. We all need to stand against anyone targeting others based on ethnicity or religion.

No Chinese? What is Ahok?

He is safe and hopefully he will go on to be govenor.
You said, "To my knowledge no Chinese were targeted. We all need to stand against anyone targeting others based on ethnicity or religion."

Is he not Chinese Indonesian and just how safe do you think he is? Why were protesters in North Jakarta targeting and harassing anyone who resembled Chinese? No, Chinese were in fact targeted and the Chinese descendant that Ahok is was the main target. This whole thing was targeting someone not of Indonesian ancestry and not Muslim. It had nothing to do with blasphemy and that was only an excuse to rally the masses. This is all about religion and ethnicity and it is going to continue as long as Ahok is a candidate and after the election if he wins.

Yes, there also powerful politicians involved and this is something Indonesia will have to navigate, in order to grow as a country. It is also about power and money/corruption. I hope the nation can progress through this, including Ahok.

I really hope that Ahok becomes governor again now - it would be one almighty FUCK YOU to the FPI from the people of Jakarta.
