The news reports that Jokowi himself recommended Ahok for a BUMN job. An attempt to make Ahok whole after being tossed under the bus?

A BUMN board position could pay USD 100k+ per month for the big ones. So if Ahok keeps himself out of controversy and signs a couple of papers every now and then he could easily walk out quite wealthy...

This article says that for Pertamina on average, board members were compensated about Rp 3M per month.

Which of course is comparable with CEO's of larger multinationals.

Obviously the difference is, that their salary is only 10% of their total renumeration (bonus, stock, stock options, ...).

The workforce assembly (let's say workers union) of Pertamina already stated they would be against having Ahok in charge...

Better than the measly salary of a governor; only 8.4 Juta per month.

Well, not really, they get compensated according to a % of the regional revenue. So then a Jakarta governor makes 2.7 Miliar per month.

There will be no clean up. The "komisaris utama" position is an advisory/supervisory position, with no day to day management role.

This job is 100% a "thank you" from Jokowi for Ahok remaining loyal to him even after he wasn't able (or willing) to protect him. If Ahok is smart, he can collect Rp 3 billion/month for the next few years for signing his name.
 
No, I'm much more optimistic and I'm sure there will be quite some scrutiny.

As Erick Thohir states: The function entails general and specific supervisory functions and provides directives to directors in carrying out the management of the company. In detail, the supervision includes company management policies, implementation of long-term plans, work plans and budgets, provisions of the articles of association and RUPS decisions, applicable laws and regulations, and provides advice to directors. [sic]
 
$200,000+/month?? For a supervisory role at a state enterprise? Good for him, he deserves it and it is a sign that governors don't need to be corrupt, they can earn high salaries too, but how does one come up with a figure like that?
Also will he get a 13th salary?

There is a rumor that Ignasius Jonan will be involved with Garuda. He used to be minister of energy and minister of transportation.

Thohir is taking a lot of actions btw; all the advisors / deputies that he had reporting to him, were put in management of (somewhat smaller) BUMN (state companies). So more field work.

The government may increase fuel price next year, will Ahok become the wrath of demonstrations? I heard electricity subsidy will be cut too, so big inflation next year and big increase in minimum wage for 2021 as wage increase is calculated based on inflation and economic growth. But can businesses afford it? Will it make matters worse? What if there is deflation and negative growth instead? Will there will decrease of minimum wage and reduced salaries?
 
Perfect scape goat, right?

One of the key objectives is to become less dependent on the import of oil. That dependency won't do the trade balance any good and it hurts the local currency. Last month the trade balance was positive btw, mainly because of changes in oil im/export. Which could mean RI becomes more competitive but also that the internal demand and consumption goes down. That way you can explain everything of course. But.....

....with an inflation which is twice as high as the US and Australia, and thrice that of Europe, I don't think a deflation is in order here.

I also don't think deflation can happen here anytime soon, I was just trying to illustrate what if it happened because I don't think workers will agree to their salaries being slashed.

On the other hand, if inflation is as high as Iran @50% and Argentina @55%, Indonesia's minimum wage will have to increase by as much too (even assuming growth is zero). If this happened, there will be many disgruntled senior employees because their salary is now on the same level as entry level staff, unless of course if company can afford substantial increase for them too. From the start, I think this formula is not good.
 
Perhaps the most potentially inflammatory inflationary trend would be if the cost of fuels were to increase. Fuel increases are felt most by the poorest and increases have triggered major riots in Iran and Zimbabwe and protests in Argentina, France and the UK.

There are always international economic experts urging countries such as Indonesia to reduce fuel subsidies. Whatever the perceived economic modelling advantages I suspect that it would be political dynamite to go down this path. What seems to be the disposition of those shaping economic strategies in Indonesia regarding future fuel subsidy cuts?
 
They will try to increase benzin prices (again), there will be massive demos (again) and they will back down (again). That's my prediction.
 
The cost of the subsidized fuel is one of the most touchy subjects in society yes. And worth while to get on the streets for. End of this month the yearly qúota for diesel will be used btw, but they expect the budget will be upped.

On a side note: battery availability is the huge problem with commercial electric vehicles nowadays. All car manufacturers struggle with this and it's a major reason why there are quota per country and long queues to buy an EV. Tesla obviously produces their own batteries. Many oil companies as Shell also try to invest and buy electricity providers (also for charging stations.) Obviously the latter is a grey area between PLN and Pertamina in Indonesia.

Now coming back to Pertamina; probably after seeing this worldwide issue, they have decided to produce their own (car) batteries. They are still looking for partnerships but they already know they will source the raw materials from central Sulawesi, create a factory and that they will invest $80 million.

Another challenge Ahok will be confronted with, is the availability of gas stations (pomp bensin) country wide.

And let's see what happens on 2 December. Looking at huge banners recently installed everywhere in the city addressing the return of the 'imam besar', I expect it will be more a demonstration to demand to get Rizieq back.

Perhaps not easy to comprehend for those living in Jakarta or on Bali, but the situation in the east of the country can be poignant.

On Flores for instance, queuing for an hour and having more than 60 cars in front of you, is quite normal. Not to speak of all these people with jerrycans. And if it’s habis, you have to wait for the refill truck.

Many big towns only have one or two Pertamina stations.



Ahok is planning to install a complaint hotline, similar to when he was governor.

This Monday we will get the FPI/212/.... demonstration.

They optimistically expect a million people, according to the police it will be closer to 10.000.

The themes will be the blasphemy charge of Soekarno' daughter and -obviously- Rizieq's return.

That has become a real soap with the current and ex ambassadors of Saudi Arabia giving completely different statements. It seems the FPI clan believes the version of the previous ambassador that there are no issues in the sandbox. (Which is very improbable since there are overstay fines.) So they blame the Indonesian government.
 
Who is going to pay for nasi bungkus for a million people with no election or other political event on the horizon? Even 10,000 might be too many.
