New Electronic Indonesian Passport, no physical visa needed for travel to Japan?

Just an update on this. My wife applied online over the weekend for her Japanese visa. It’s pretty easy. Just needed flight info, hotels, picture of passport. When submitting the application, there wasn’t really a, “Ok application successfully submitted” screen, but just text in red that...

Only applies if you‘re Indonesian. I still notice.

Roof drain is flooding inside our kitchen everytime there is heavy rain.

Well, my wife has contacted our architect who was in charge of our remodel, 9 years ago or so. He didn’t have anything to do with the plumbing, but has come up with a plan for a new drainage system from the roof. He’s working on a project in Jogja now, so trying to locate an experienced small...

Looks like I may be moving to Jakarta

Definitely try to live close to where you want to go. Restaurants, malls, movies, etc. Traffic can be very horrible. We once spent 3 hours in a taxi for Friday rush hour to go a few miles. Noise levels, including mosques call to prayer can vary widely. A small apartment we had in 2011, in...

    Cottage cheese in North Jakarta

I‘m fine with yoghurts. I liked the French ones in little glass jars when I was staying in Paris before Covid. In Indonesia I mainly eat the Greenfield brand, although one of my favorite flavors, blueberry has weird little pieces in them. I select the berry type, lately.

    Cottage cheese in North Jakarta

I’m glad I have no problems locating cottage cheese. Never liked it!

Roof drain is flooding inside our kitchen everytime there is heavy rain.

Well, we are still running into some flooding when we have hujan deras. My wife called out another plumber, highly rated online (for what that’s worth). Two guys with a 17 meter long professional plumbing snake setup. Supposed costs if they solved the problem, 70k per meter of the snake used...

    How do you guys invest?

I have existing US investment accounts. No VPN needed for Fidelity, or E-Trade. I have a dormant Schwab account, but have never tried to access it here.

The harsh reality of being homeless in Jakarta

It seems most of the safety net for the homeless, mentally ill, substance abusers is through relatives, or mosques. Not many pensions in the private sector. So, if you don’t have assets, or adult kids to support you, it’s not a pretty picture. The US has many of the same problems, but most...

Any opinions on the different EV models coming into Indonesia? I see that Xpeng is assembling their first units in Indonesia. Two models, that I saw. A SUV, and a sedan, I think. I’ve been a fairly long shareholder of some different EV companies for my kids education account, and am interested...

    Wedding Guests

We received a couple with 5000 in the envelope. We had a nice wedding reception at a hotel in Bekasi. Nothing over the top. I was the only bule there. I think we went from 200 to 300 at the last minute. About 250 showed up.

Immigration asking for your social media US

Going through customs, in many places around the world is a PITA. I’ve gotten extra checks coming into the US in my younger days. I brought back a suitcase full of individual German beers for one of my brothers, and they barely glanced at my declaration form. From 2001-2010 I was pretty burnt...

Flying with Trasnusa or Super Air jet

I’m not sure that Whoosh is handicapped accessible for my large (and heavy) electric wheelchair. In the past when I looked at flights from Halim, they were very limited. We flew one flight out of the “replacement” BDO airport, and were not impressed at all. I certainly miss driving 10-15...

Roof drain is flooding inside our kitchen everytime there is heavy rain.

We had problems when they painted our daughter’s room. We let her choose the color, and she picked a very bright orange (think Clownfish orange). They didn’t prep it right the first time. Scrape off and do again. A few areas were still not right, so they had to fix those. Now my kid wants to...

Flying with Trasnusa or Super Air jet

Wings is pretty horrible. Air Asia, Citilink, Garuda are all fine. Lion is so-so, if you book a morning flight. I‘m just bummed out that I can’t fly out of BDO anymore. Driving to CGK can get a bit old.

That’s why you always hold back payments on jobs. Indonesia and everywhere. Even on our big remodel job in Bandung, we held back 10% of the total to 30 days after everything was all the way completed. We started out giving them 10% to start buying supplies, and would release another 10% when a...

Well, it’s turned into a bit of a Where’s Waldo hunt. They dig it up and find a pipe. Cut into it. Pour a bucket of water from the roof. Nothing comes out. Ran a wire into it, for a meter or two, and don’t find any blockages. Such fun!
