ISIS is not a government, The cartels do what they want in Mexico but that doesn't make them the government. Apples and oranges. That's it. I'm done with this. You use scare tactics to lump all Muslims into one dangerous group because of the actions of a few outliers.

Say that to the Indonesian government, which revoked the citizenship of Indonesians who joined ISIS to fight.

These facts remain :

• There is grassroots backing, sizable political parties ready to leverage the issue for electoral advantage, and ongoing indoctrination of children in religious boarding schools.
• Additionally, a notable number of suicide bombers have come from alumni of these boarding schools.

And what about the “boom boom” law, where some people in here were certain it would never happen, only for it to be passed just months later. One should never be overly confident.

But the central issue is that the law remains in force, and authorities continue to have the legal authority to detain individuals under it. Although reporting is subject to certain eligibility requirements, those requirements themselves are vulnerable to abuse. Legal spouses, parents, children, or religious extremists acting in coordination with them could misuse the reporting mechanism.

Under the new law, even if enforcement is uneven or selective, legal spouses and adult family members who oppose such relationships, together with religious extremists cooperating with them are able to report consenting adults to law enforcement.

In families marked by strained relationships or conflicts over property or financial interests, this provision can be weaponised for blackmail or extortion. Additionally, individuals involved in prostitution or opportunistic relationships, aided by family members and, in certain cases, through collusion with law enforcement may stage honey-trap or sting operations to coerce or extort money.

so good news for all the boom boom afficianados out there.

Hopefully this new law can help to solve at least some of these cases and prevent new ones.

Under Indonesian citizenship law, an Indonesian citizen cannot be rendered stateless.
But the Indonesians who joined to fight with ISIS/ISIL have had their citizenship revoked. Why? Because the Indonesian government contends that ISIS/ISIL functions as a state and that these individuals voluntarily chose to become citizens of that entity.

Serving a foreign military was a basis for revocation in this case, I think.

Not that I think Indonesian judiciary and government is great, but the last guy doing this got 20 years prison and sterilisation, December this year.
In 2022, Islamic boarding school theacher was sentenced for life for rape.

Serving a foreign military was a basis for revocation in this case, I think.

It is true, under Indonesian Citizenship Law No. 12 of 2006, Indonesian citizenship may be lost by operation of law if an individual joins a foreign armed force without permission or swears allegiance to a foreign state or entity.

However at the same time, the law strongly emphasises the principle that the state should not actively render individuals stateless. This has been repeatedly emphasised multiple times in various articles in law.

The government position, In public and political discourse, ISIS was frequently described as a foreign entity that exercised state-like functions at that time, including territorial control, governance structures, court, armed forces, leadership hierarchy, and civil administration. These characteristics were cited to support the view that individuals who joined ISIS knowingly transferred their allegiance away from Indonesia and placed themselves outside its legal protection of Indonesia to join that state-alike foreign entity..
