I've had it explained to me a few times as close family and friends tend not to say thanks for routine things like helping, buying dinner and presents (yes, Java, possibly other parts of Indonesia, is a present giving culture). A thank you can be taken as they are outsiders.
Not sure other...
I've had a few problems in the Indomarets and Alfamart/midis in Bali. One to watch out for is when you give a100,000 note but they type in 90,000 so the display looks legit, while they short change you by 10,000.
Cheers for your replies.
To answer a question. I'm not too fussed about the small change, in fact I prefer not having to carry it around.
I mean a few thousand now and then.
Seems like it's only me it happens to :)
Just to clarify from the start, I don't intend this to be an Indonesian bashing thread, I just want to get your thoughts on something that happens quite a lot to me.
That is mistakes in shops with giving change.
I probably get the wrong change once every couple of weeks on average, which is...
Just come back from Bali with a pretty bad taste in my mouth. There are plenty of no Uber or Grag signs in the areas I visited. However, taxis were hard to find and many wouldn't put a meter on. So I resorted to the "transport Mister" guys who have doubled their prices in recent years.

I still shake my head with that one.
Please keep us updated with your thoughts on the podcast. I have been following this thread with great interest.
I've been having great luck with ChinesePod recently, although I guess this seems to be a different company.
What do you think is happening with this Setya business?
He is in hospital after a car crash. Some reports say he was getting away from reporters, other say he was on his way to an interview for Metro TV.
There are conspiracy theories all over Facebook showing pictures of the car damage...
This thread reminds me of the days I lost reading about the scam baiting on this site:

I've wanted to try myself, however, I've never been lucky enough to receive a windfall from a Nigerian prince.
I was pleasantly surprised to read this this morning:

It's one of the rare occasions where politicians here say something that makes sense to me. There is some hope :).
I really hope they continue to push this line...
This is a good question, I'd like to know the answer too. I know where I live, there is the inflated asking price people ask because a neighbor down the road is trying their luck (they have heard about the high prices asked for by another neighbor) , and the real price people actually get.
The...
