I don't think it's that different from existing practices. Of course it could be used by irreputable establishments to blackmail customers. Imagine, a tourist goes for a ++massage, then the husband of the lady comes in and demands money from the tourist or he'll go to the police. On the other hand there are always plenty of laws here that people can use against you if they want, for example the pornography law.
Certainly won't be implemented in Bali, that's for sure. Also won't stop people being nakal either.
Now if they passed an Iranian-style law making all women wear the jilbab, with accompanying morality police like in backward places like Aceh, that could get interesting.

You'd think that, but nine times out of ten if you mention Indonesia people in the United States are nonplussed. They have no idea what it is/where it is, they just think they don't care for it. If you mention Bali, suddenly they're sharing with you all their plans to go there "someday".

They think it's two separate countries. They can't even pick Indonesia out on a map usually, much less get dissuaded from visiting. Not too worried about what Western press makes this out to be and how it might influence people.

You were so very on the mark when you ably spoke about the central government's slide toward autocratic controls. That's always a concern anyone should have when watching the politics of Indonesia. It's definitely my greatest concern for my family. Why not direct the conversation toward that rather than clumsily associating the Indonesian nation with being "backwards" as another put it?

Good points to clarify.
Society will go back to the "stone age", or backward, middle ages, 19 century, whatever. If debates and free discourse are not allowed, there will be no exchange of ideas or progress, human, or scientific, or any other. And an autocratic state, to be functional, requires obedient and not very smart citizens. That kind of government system has no proper feedback about realities on the field, as sycophants are free to speak only, which leads to problems in the long term.

In essence, Indonesian national ideology and hence identity was set by a handful of Indonesian intellectuals heavily influenced by French and US philosophers and revolutionaries from the 18-19 century period, based on freedom and equality. However, Indonesian history was often not in concord with its founding principles, but when the country got real freedom in the period 1998-2017, the society flourished.

Was watching a YouTube video the other day, had a couple of well-to-do folks on it wondering why they couldn't get famous international brands to make shops in Brunei, even though the people there have a high income. First thing to pop into my mind, "I'm not going anywhere where I can have a hand lopped off because I was falsely accused of shoplifting.“ What are the odds of that happening? Really tiny, I'll admit. But, I'm not interested in rolling the dice. I'm certainly not doing it on vacation.

I'll just add that I would assume a country with regressive and inhumane laws to also have a shit legal system, since we already know human rights are not one of their priorities.

To those who say that most people from the developed world can't find Indonesia on a map, don't know anything about it; now they know one thing, it wants to prosecute consenting adults for having sex. What a great introduction. Bit like putting a "Beware of dog! No trespassers!" sign up, really makes strangers want to stop in for a cuppa.
