Hi everyone, newbie here planning to move to Jakarta despite lockdown!

So you're all right and I'm wrong? Is that how it starts?
What if 4 people think I'm right?
Do we need to vote?
Some people are blunt and to the point

Others are verbose and waffle on

I like to be straight talking. Welcome to the real world
It's not all rainbows and unicorns here.
As soon as she arrives the first immigration / taxi driver is going to try scam her anyway

Better she get used to life in Indonesia

Anyway you're entitled to your opinion.

Thankyou. Next.

You're cracking me up! But seriously, a little self-reflection never hurt anybody. I see that's not going to happen here, and I'm not sure RSOTI (random strangers on the internet) are your best bet for feedback anyway. But I hope you consider input from people you know in real life less dismissively.

Personally, I am amazed by the numbers of dreamers that post rather silly questions on the Indo forums .
I mean, when somebody decides to move to another country, one will do the necessary research on the internet, immigration websites, contact visa agents etc ? ...
The number of times I saw things like " I went on holiday, and I am really in love with Bali, and the Indonesian people, their smile, their kindness... blablabla....I have decided to move over there in 3 months. Please advice me about posssibility of jobs, which visa I should use, where to stay ..."
Hell, come on !

I thought I saw it all on Thai forums, but seems that Bali attracts a lot of dreamers.
Personally I cant be bothered to give them information they could find with a simple Google search.
Maybe it's the F.B. style generation ? Ask questions even before starting to think ?
I recommend you check out the r/expat and r/IWANTOUT subreddits - full of these dreamy people. Lately there seems to be a lot of Americans who think they can just move anywhere in the world to work as if its a god given right to them (many with very mediocre skills).
Anyway - the op of this thread doesnt necessarily strike me as that sort of person - she just came here asking for a recommendation of where to live which is very sensible. I did the same when I first moved to Jakarta but luckily I had a friend who advised me so I didnt have to open myself up to the unrequested visa advice on here ;)

Ya you get get people like that. This is how I picture some of them. Rated PG

It's all good. Someone has to be the arsehat / voice of reason etc etc

Apparently on the fb group I'm considered the denizen of all knowledge regarding visas as if I'm the one making the rules.

People still can't believe that the government has an official website where they clearly state the laws in English updated daily about current situation and still 10 people a day post asking the same questions then also DM me asking the same and then some of them even attack me and send me abusive messages when they don't like the answers.

But I'm not the one making the rules. Lol.

Anyway in the old days being an expat meant you were at the top of your industry and it was an honour to represent your company and country to be sent overseas to work. Usually they were educated and smart and did research on the destination.

Now it's just a cop out. Europe sucks. Hhhmmm let me move to Bali and become a blogger. Or worse case I can always become a teacher to survive.

Like the future education of the next generation is in the hands of a Starbucks nomad failure who came to Bali with no plan and will teach your child english just to cover his kos and bintang bills.

Imagine if people just decided to be a pilot overnight for the sake of it

Being a teacher is one of the most important things in society. You are putting your child's future in the hands of some of these people who don't know and dont care about teaching but it's just a way for them to run away from their home countries.

Then they come here and moan about it more and are totally unprepared and dont know anything about the country. Some even think Jakarta is in Bali etc etc

Not saying the OP is that but eventually after hundreds of people asking the same ridiculous questions it gets annoying. It's not like these days there isn't billions of pages of info and Google to ask questions. Even embassy pages or immigration pages etc

Decades ago when I moved to Dubai no one had ever heard of it. I had to research myself. Before the interwebby existed. Dialing up and using aol etc
It was literally a desert with a couple of buildings. Back then emirates flew to UK like twice a week. Now it flys to London alone about 8 times a day!

Anyway I guess it's just my personal gripe when people are lazy to do ANY groundwork themselves.

The end.
Lots of love LOL

I'm pretty sure I recognize you on the FB expat groups and I do love your snappy responses. I totally agree with you most of the time. I've also completely lost my patience with people not putting any effort into their research about moving here (see them more on reddit or FB than here though...mind you we had that Durian lover on here the other day so they are here too).
I think the Op was probably not one of those people though - but who knows really.

I agree with you as a general matter, but not in the case of this thread. Asking "how do I hunt for an apartment during Covid when I don't drive, and here is where my office will be located?" is a SMART question, not a silly one.

I agree and disagree.

No because using Google Maps, the OP could locate their office and see roughly what is around it. Then the OP could ask about a particular area and for details.

Yes because of how do you apartment hunt in the current situation is valid. There are a number of questions that can and should be asked.

As I tell my students especially those in Jr. High, feed me details and don't be so vague. The more information, the more likely we can help.

Don't drive? Use a taxi / grab. That wasn't so hard.

And hunting for an apartment? Well where is your office and then refine your search. Or of course use the search function. Like previous posters.
Or she will end up being one of those moaning on fb cos they pay $2500 for a 75sqm 2 bed apartment.

Or the girl subletting a 32sqm ROOM for 9 jt.

She meant she would like to live within walking distance of HI. (I paraphrased her poorly, my bad.) Google Maps will only tell you so much, especially for a country you are unfamiliar with. What's so hard about making suggestions to her for good places to live within walking distance of the circle?

Don't be a pedant.

I was indeed speaking in a general way.
Point is that after too many silly questions, people simply dont bother to answer to less silly ones.
Or sometimes answer but showing a bit of.irritation in their post...
Personally when I planned to move here, i did my research, including reading some forums but never asked any questions.
Simply because there was no need for it.
All sorted in 4 months.

But that's me.

A new low for the forum if you ask me......several members ganging up to tell another to change his style of answering, so we should all become happy robots answering the same way.

I don't particularly feel like I am in a gang, nor ganging up on anyone IF your comment was including me.
I am merely offering up my opinion and having a lil fun with Snpark.
I feel he has responded in kind & IF he is hurt /offended well... I think he answered that on page 1.

I would hate for him to change his style, but when responding to someone making their first post in the forum it doesn't hurt to be either kind or just say nothing.
To be perfectly honest I have got to the point of losing interest in responding to questions/comments 99.9% of the time these days.
If I do, I tend to go with direct messages.
Snpark is actually one of the few I bother to interact with, because he has some character & personality.

In public I wouldn't say boo to a goose
Nothing beats the anonymity of being an internet keyboard warrior
Ok back to the Daily Mail comments section.
I'm on the morning shift

Hell no. BA can speak for herself, and has done so. The fact we largely agree is hardly because we're part of a gang.

On the other hand, I'm a moderator here, and so is dafluff. Comments (or "likes") from either one of us in the context of this thread, where I raised the possibility that snark's post might have had a negative affect on a newbie's desire to join us, can be safely assumed to be related not only to our personal opinions, but to forum goals - which include helping newbies and building the number of posters who return to participate in discussion.

We usually all agree to disagree. I look at it as Pusp doing mod duty and BA being BA, our resident mother who isn't afraid to smack us in the head if we act up. This is one of the more chilled out forums I have been part of. The only time we zip and shut it is if Atlantis speaks. He the the all knowing Oz.
