What happened at Monas ?

If you go to Twitter and search on "Monas" you can find more info in both Indonesian and English. Not a lot being reported yet - two injuries, one minor and one serious, doesn't seem to be a suicide bomber, Monas closed to the public at the moment. But that info could be incomplete/inaccurate.

Apparently a smoke grenade went off, injuring 2 soldiers. Looks like an accident. Monas has been reopened.

The TNI report caused some concern with their idea that it wasn't an attack. The TNI member picked up a plastic bad and it went off. Could this not be the same as a bomb with a timer or trip wire. They seem to be writing it off rather quickly without any real explanation. Could it be a leftover from 212?

It’s strange, military smoke grenades that I know don’t explode, they simply produce smoke.

Maybe it’s a “flashbang” grenade, a less lethal device used to stun people prior to a forced entry. It is a common item for antiterror police units, or even the riot police. At very close range it can cause injury, but it’s rarely fatal.

The missing piece here is how it exploded. A grenade doesn’t just explode by itself. You actually have to remove the safety pin by pulling it hard. What kind of soldiers are stupid enough to pull the pin on a grenade and stick around?

The gov says it doesn't belong to any of them. The grenade went off as soon as the guy picked up the plastic bag that contained it. There is more than they are letting on I believe.

Kapolda Metro Jaya (Jakarta Police Chief) himself said it could have been a smoke grenade belonging to the police. Now the gov’t changed their mind.

I think they’re actively trying to downplay the fact that an explosive device injured two soldiers just across the street from Istana Merdeka, the presidential residence. I can’t believe that a ‘grenade’ exploded just because it was touched, unless it was specifically rigged to do so. If it was, then it should be called a “booby trap”, which points to terrorism.

I suspect that it was a primer component of a real grenade, without the main explosive and shrapnel. It was set up as a trap, so the pin was out and the safety spoon would fall out as soon as pressure was removed from it.
