WiFi boosters?

We subscribe to Indovision and have a satellite dish for the service. Invariably the internet is slow to exasperating. I keep coming across these WiFi booster advertisements that suggest they would speed up the service. Would they improve the delivery with the satellite dish set up?

Thanks in anticipation of some helpful responses.

Not the delivery to the dish of course. If you have bad WiFi signals in and around the house, they would make sense yes. Just like bigger antennas on your wireless router and additional Wifi extenders and amplifiers.

So it depends where the 'lag' occurs. I'm afraid satellite internet will never be up to par. So consider a 4G router, quite good coverage with Telkomsel in Jimbaran...

Thanks for the response jstar.
The present device is a Huawei router (or should I be calling that a modem?) provided by Indovision. Can we assume a 4g router would give a better wifi and if so where is the best place to get one in Bali?

If you know what you want (look at Indonesian websites TP Link and HUAWEI) and can install yourself, order via websites as Tokopedia, Bukalapak, Lazada, .... Much cheaper. They also have (TELKOMSEL) package deals of routers with SIM+pulsa which is easy to install.

If you want a good solution package deal and don’t know how to get started, go to the TELKOMSEL Grapari shop. (Badung Jl By Pass Benoa)

I can't comment on cost comparison but I used a SmartFren 4G LTE portable router. One would be fine if the house is not huge.
800

It worked well for me. Keep the TV feed for the TV and use the Smartfren for everything else?
Buy the biggest package available. Cost me about 300,000 a month.

I used Smartfren because my employer owns Smartfren and there was a "shop" in the HR office.

Sinarmas right? Big conglomerate in RI.

All will work you just need to determine the best coverage in your house. In Indonesia the antennas are often not shared (what is a legal requirement in the EU for instance, they have to rent out to their competitors) so it could be some have a superior coverage compared to others.

Indosat was not great in Jimbaran, some others were better.

I use this in the rental house where I share the fiber broadband subscription with my landlord. Signal is barely reachable in my master bedroom initially. After installing this in the kitchen (which is like in the middle between my landlord's house and the test of my rental house), it's sufficient for us to be youtubing in my bedroom.

It's got a simple web interface where you just set it to connect to your router in repeater mode and that's set. Helps that it plugs directly to the power outlet. Cost me about 180k rupiah, including shipping.

Now that I've moved to Batam and temporarily staying in a Kost, this comes in useful as well.

During the day my laptop is only about 10 feet away from the wifi device and the other main spot in a bedroom less than 30 feet away. So I suppose then that the problem is the signal itself rather than the wifi? As is evident from my simplistic enquiries I have minimal understanding of how this stuff works. Would a booster actually help in this circumstance?

10 feet's away is maybe 3 meter? I suppose there's a wall in between then? Cos 3 meters is too short a distance to weaken wifi signal.

Mie Tek Tek,

No wall for the 10 foot position and a wall and wooden door to the bedroom. There seems no difference in speed between the two positions but just generally the exasperating process of say, watching a video perfectly well some times and then that annoying stop start process at other times. In general the overall result is loading even websites often takes a long time.

I'm afraid satalite internet is way out of my league here.

Usually, in a fiber broadband scenario, we would advise the user to connect his laptop directly to the modem via Lan Cable and test the speed. The conventional setup for Fiber Broadband is usually as follow:

Terminating Point <-> Modem <-> Router <-> User Devices

By connecting directly to the modem, we eliminate the router as the potential culprit. If you're still getting weak signal at this point, most likely the signal from satalite is weak to begin with.

If signal is ok with directly connecting to modem, then next week be to test directly connecting to router via Lan cable. If signal is ok, then likely is the wifi component that's weak. If signal is well with Lan cable connection, then the router is likely the weakest link. Maybe you can look at the router's firmware version and updating it if there's a newer version.

This is what I would do in the case of fiber broadband. I'm not sure if your satalite internet is setup similarly though.
