Visible pollution and invisible poisons

Plastic waste and garbage is an undeniable menace with rubbish everywhere and micro particle plastics now in the food chain with fish. Perhaps even worse are the invisible, toxic chemicals which we don't see. Older members will recall Rachel Carson's book "The silent spring" which thrust forward the disastrous overuse of pesticides, particularly DDT.

Now a US court has ordered Monsanto to pay a record $289 million to a former groundskeeper who developed a blood cell cancer which the jury found caused the plaintiff's cancer. “We were finally able to show the jury the secret, internal Monsanto documents proving that Monsanto has known for decades that ... Roundup could cause cancer,” the plaintiff's lawyer said.

Of course Monsanto are appealing and will fight as the tobacco industry fought to deny the links between smoking and cancers.

Here's a link to the story.

It does leave me wondering about how widespread Roundup is used in Indonesia.

Monosanto do not have a very good name, they are one of the makers of Skydrol, a hydraulic fluid used in aircraft, supposedly harmless, get some in your eyes and feel the effect, have some on your skin and see the rash it causes, allegedly harmless, it’s an excellent paint remover, I had some at home when I worked at BA, I used it to remove the graffiti sprayed on my garage door, I don’t think I would believe anything Monosanto say, but personally I’ve never seen any of their garden products here

I'll have a look

The story of the introduction of Skydrol type fluids in civil aviation is covered in a Kindle book entitled "The Skydrol Story",

Anglian's post has brought up vivid memories for me....

It was nearly midnight in HKG and I got off the bus and walked to the B747 I was crewing to London. It had a Skydrol leak and it was windy...just as I reached the aircraft steps the ground-engineers opened the engine panel and the wind blew a shower of leaked Skydrol over me.
Boy did it sting...I ran up-stairs and the cabin crew flooded me with water to dilute the Skydrol. I thought I was blind. Transport quickly whisked me to the medical section at the airport where a doctor relieved some pain with salve or something. My exposed skin started to take on a rash but he used the same salve and it was a relief.
My main concern was my eyesight but the doctor assured me I'd be OK...and he was right. After a day of rest I was fit enough to return to work but it was a painful and anxious experience.

Now that would be an interesting read, the best thing for Skydrol in the eyes or anywhere is milk , should you have a bottle handy, and always wash your hands before you have a wee,

Monosanto do not have a very good name ...

An understatement.

Monsanto are one of the bottom feeders in the agriculture business.

They're one of the instigators in patenting GMOs allowing them to:
1) Charge an annual licensing fee to users of their seed.
Users cannot save seed from one harvest to plant the next without paying for the privilege!
2) Sue farmers growing pure natural product on adjacent plots that have been polluted by wind-blown GMO pollen.
These honest farmers CANNOT even sue Monsanto (who are protected under US law) for crapping on their clean fields.

Vice (the series) did an interesting slot where whole countries (Peru I think was one) were allegedly bribed to only allow Monsanto GMO soya beans, etc to be planted. Banana Republic deja vu!

Monsanto seem to have only one interest to sell their product irrespective of results good or bad
