Aussie deported from Indonesia in honeymoon nightmare

Aussie rescued from Indonesian honeymoon nightmare

Based on the article info, it sounds like the government suspects her of being somewhere between a human rights activist and an agent provocateur for the Papuan independence movement

Here's her explanation in a Twitter thread (link)

Sounds like:

2009 she was a journalist in Jakarta (until when?)

2016 she visited Papua as a tourist. She applied for a visa extension in Papua and they suspected she was still acting as a reporter. Her extension was denied and she was added to the blacklist. She was told something about the blacklist being 6 months, and thought after that time had passed she could enter again.

2018 she arrived in Bali and they found her name is still on the blacklist. She hadn't realized after 6 months she could apply for it to be removed, but it wouldn't happen automatically. (https://www.expatindo.org/blacklisted-indonesia/)

Basically the above. The "6 month" blacklist is basically a lifetime ban, until someone actually removes it from the system.

I saw this on twitter yesterday, and thought to myself I should link our article. But in my opinion, now that it has gone viral on social media and even mainstream media, it is unlikely that regular blacklist appeal is going to work.

As an aside, I guess this event (and her twitter) also explains why our blacklisting article had a spike in readers this past day.
