Ahok's Blasphemy Trial Verdict - 9 May 2017

Well I've said it before and sadly I will say it again, this is not a democratic country, the judicial system is fucked, and getting a fair trail is non existan, anybody know a honest corrupt free judge

The UN already has saying it is against The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights. This whole thing is crazy (a) blasphemy charge (b) trumped up charge based on edited tape (c) guilty of said charge using a panel of judges reviewing the law. Welcome to the middle ages.

I don't see a list of progressive nations with Muslim majorities. Indonesia was listed as the only one considered a true democracy. (blasphemy that people can be charged with) I know there are many good faithful Muslim people but the radicals using this religion are oppressive and this what the fundamentalists want. Also, you have corrupt people of whatever stripes wanting power/corruption

A sad day for Indonesia.

The extremists won and this will only encourage them to push for more.

They got their way. They always do.. and not just in Indonesia.

.

My hope Ahok isn't detained while the appeal is processed.

Cipinang prison is preparing for his arrival as I type this.

The info I got from a close friend who works in the prison's hospital as a dentist.

I meant after an appeal has been lodged...that's when bail or a detention decision will be made. I'm sure they'll retain his travel documents to further humiliate him.
I hope your dentist friend isn't sharpening dental tools...I believe Ahok has some gold fillings.

He is already in the prison now.

My friend and her colleagues are Ahok supporters. They don't even understand why suddenly the governor sent to jail. It is not supposed to be like that. Not like the normal practice, at least

What a sad joke of a country and weak government , I wonder what justice we would get in the courts ? ah sorry I forgot its not a democracy as we know it .

Sorry for Ahok.

Absolutely despicable. The whole thing never even made any sense to me. Perhaps you guys can explain to me, from the perspective of the prosecutors and anti-Ahokers (justified or not), what exactly did he do wrong? Quote the Qur'an, that's all? Am I missing something?

He did nothing wrong. Simply.. he's the wrong religion and the wrong race..

An easy target.

I realize that.. I guess my question is what was the prosecution's official argument? That non-Muslims cannot quote the Qur'an?

Actually the prosecution only sought probation jail time. The judges dismissed that and gave an even harsher sentence than what the prosecution wanted.

The prosecution dropped the Blasphemy charge due to no evidence to prove it but the judges still convicted him of it.

I guess I was looking for a better understanding where one can't exist.

So I guess I'll never open the Qur'an ever. Too risky. I might have a slip of the tongue and refer to it in conversation. I actually have a copy but perhaps it's safer if I just give it away or throw it out.

UK: Voting for Brexit was the dumbest thing.

USA: Voting for Trump was the dumbest bro!

Indonesia: LOL! You two are amateurs. Hold my beer guys.
