Effective immediately, the import duty exemption is increased from US $50 to US $100. This means importing goods (or purchasing online then shipping to Indonesia) has become slightly more cost effective.

However, note that Indonesian customs count the value of imported goods as the value of the goods plus the shipping cost. So if you buy something online, the total cost including shipping has to be under US $100 for the item to be exempt from import duties.

Indonesia still has among the most draconian import duties in the world, with the value of duty and taxes often equaling the cost of the goods itself.

That's good news!

Question: if the item + shipping is above $100, is the import duty calculated on the whole value or just what is in excess of $100 only?

Say I buy an item at $80 + $30 shipping, the total value is then $110. Is the import duty based on the whole $110 or only the $10?

I don't care if the value is one or 1,000 dollars. Our post office holds everything until we pay them something.

It's on everything. From the link:

barang kiriman yang melebihi nilai pembebasan akan seluruhnya dikenakan bea masuk dan pajak impor,

Goods exceeding the exemption value will be assessed duties and taxes on the whole (amount).

Too bad...

On a related topic, I've been looking for a Samsung Chromebook Plus and so far it's only available to me via Amazon. If I get it shipped to Indonesia, it's about $400 for the laptop itself + over $200 shipping and import duty deposit!

By comparison, if I get it shipped to Singapore, the price of the item is the same but the shipping is free and the import duty deposit is only $29!

Yeah, that applies in almost every country btw (so also in the EU for instance); from a customs perspective the transportation costs are always added to the value of the items.

I would not want to be a trendsetter on that Chromebook as long as the future of Chrome/Android/merged OS is so unclear btw. Even if they have the play store available.

Even without the Android integration, it's a fine notebook and fits perfectly our needs. I use a desktop at home and my wife uses her phone and iPad. There is stuff that she struggles with on those devices such as word and excel type of stuff and more efficient browsing due to the limitation of those devices. A full fledged laptop would be overkill for what she needs to do and a (good) chromebook fits nicely in between.

I assume a Windows laptop at that price point would be pretty crap. Too thick, poor screen, etc.

With ChromeOS being light, guts don't need to be expensive which means Samsung can make a better screen and better overall build quality compared to a similarly priced laptop.

That's my reasoning anyway.

I still admit that I haven't shopped for a laptop for a long time. Is there any windows laptop that would be comparable at that price?

What you need to keep on asking yourself, is: What do I need it for?

We had the same issue. iPad and iPhone, great. Samsung Galaxy S7 and Tab S2, perfect. But they could not do what we wanted; some good spreadsheet and word processing with complete compatibilty with Excel & Word and easy printing, scanning etc. Did not feel like learning a new Office suite (again) either. The old Lenovo and HP laptops we still had sucked and were simply too slow to run even newer Windows versions.

Now I read quite some discrepencies in your assesment. And and I know where you're coming from and I am exactly the same; it would be cool to have a higher resolution or very light machine. But do you need it? So, if you need simple office tasks, a bigger screen is much more important. That means 15,6" minimum. And how often do you really take the laptop and should it really be that slim? Should it fit in a big purse or thin briefcase? No way.

So I ended up looking at HP, Asus, Acer, Dell. And ended with a much cheaper choice: a Chuwi Lapbook. Happy so far. Not thrilled, not excited and it's rather boring. But hey, it does the job.

so I ordered some things online from china... they used bpost for shipping. the tracking is rather vague doesnt say where goods have been "announced" only the time and date. Last tracking point was March 14. I am assuming that is here in Jakarta. How long after goods enter Indonesia until I get the packaged delivered or a slip to go to the pos to take it?

Also does the tax apply to all people or just expats? because total cost was 109 usd

Of course import duty and taxes apply to everyone. After a week or so, we visit the post office to get the package. There is delivery at home but I have seen three week periods for that. Orders placed abroad and imports are always hit or miss. Just like FP, I always have to pay administration costs to the local Pos (>7.000 IDR). Even on dog collar of $3 with free shipping from AliExpress.

And the big issue is often the import class system (HS code) of course; if they classify something as luxury good they can impose up to 400%. Also, there often is discussion about the amount paid (ad valorem) vs the value of the item in RI (unit of measurement, on which they want to base the costs; we had this with a large amount of boxes in which there was mixed content).

I bought a Toshiba CB2 Chromebook last year for $300 on Amazon. It's great and it does everything I will ever need on a computer.

I will never waste mega bucks on Macbook or Windows again.. all that processing power is just a waste for my usage senario which is almost 100 percent web based anyway, perfect for a Chromebook.

Android apps were promised for the Toshiba CB2 Chromebook last year but still haven't got them even on the developer channel.

I am also interested in the new Sammy Chromebooks but will wait for the Samsung Chromebook Pro which will have the Intel processor.

I am curious about getting stuff sent to Singapore instead of Indonesia. Is there a mailing address in Singapore where you can get stuff sent to for pick up later.?

On the topic of the Chromebook, jstar's post got me thinking (thanks for that!) and I wondered if indeed 12" might just be too small.

So I took my wife to an Apple reseller to look at the screen sizes so she gets the idea. There was a shiny new MacBook Pro 13" (latest model) next to a 12" MacBook and I was confident she would like the 13". Instead, she said she wouldn't want something so big and that the 12" MacBook would be perfect as she could fit in her bag and wasn't so bulky. She wasn't to happy about the price though!

So I did more research and couldn't really find something that small and that good in the price range of the Samsung Chromebook Plus.

All reviews (from professional reviewers/bloggers as well as Amazon verified purchase reviews) were pretty much saying the same things and pointing out the same pros and cons. And I think I can live with the few flaws of this device. So I ordered one and got it delivered to my friend's uncle's shop in Singapore. It arrived today and I'll pick it up in 2 weeks at the same time as a small holiday in Singapore.

Early reviewers received a Samsung Chromebook Pro rather than Plus. During those tests, it appears that the Plus was actually working better than the Pro because the architecture of the ARM processor is more adapted to Android than that of the Intel processor. I'm sure a few updates will sort the problems out but it's best to keep in mind.

There must be some kind of service I'm sure. In my case, I have a friend who let me ship it to his uncle's shop. But if it hadn't been possible, I would have simply shipped it to the hotel we're staying at and given them a heads up to hold the package for us. In fact, I did exactly that in Japan earlier this month: I ordered some educational toy for my son which are much cheaper on Amazon Japan rather than in Indonesia and after checking with the hotel that it would be ok for them to receive it on my behalf, I ordered on Amazon JP and the items arrived almost a week before our check-in. All went smoothly.

This great news. We been buying a fair amount online and we have even asked seller if they could lower the price of the item on the elevolop where it says value. Which some will do. This new development will allow us to order more things we want.
Now for a question to people that use a p.o. box , do you know if there is a size limit to the box they will accept. We asked at post office and have got conflicting answers , but my indonesian isn't that good .

Question about this: how long will it take for the regulations regarding the new exemption to be "socialized"? One thing in Indonesia which perplexes me is that even when a law or regulation changes, the changes do not fully go into effect until long after their official change date. This seems especially applicable to laws which benefit common people as opposed to changes which benefit wealthy / powerful people.

What do you think; how soon can we safely import items with declared values > $50 and < $100?

So I've just picked up my Samsung Chromebook Plus. First impression? It's everything I've hoped for and I absolutely love it. The build quality is great, it feels very premium for its price. The screen size is perfect for what I need.

This was supposed to be for my wife but it looks like we will fight over it haha.

Have you tried any Android apps yet.?

Nothing available yet on my Toshiba CB2.

Only installed feedly but I found that I preferred the website version. Haven't tried any other app yet. Will report if I do.
