Literacy is being heavily pushed in many schools & it is an uphill battle.
I know of several (none international type schools) that actually have a separate section of a day set aside purely for literacy- sitting down and reading a book either alone or as a class activity.
Sadly for many (worldwide) , actual book reading is in decline.
E-books are not new-fangled, they have been out for the past 15 years or more.
A long time ago, I swore I would never get into them as I had a collection of near 2000 books at home, and then I moved to Indonesia and my books did not.
Kindle all the way now!
I can't say I am an avid reader as that would be the understatement of the century, I likely read a book every day or 2 days- unless I am insanely busy (which I am just now- I think it has taken me a month to finish the 600 page book I was reading).
Anyway- yes I know of lots of Indonesians of all religious backgrounds who do read- for fun.
BUT most people these days are just blindly addicted to their smart phones and the reels/shorts/games.
It makes me feel quite sad for these younger generations.
As for teachers, the quality of them and the lack of them, I guess I would prefer fewer bums on seats if the ones on the seats were of high quality.
I have met some great teachers over the years and I have met some that would be locked up in many other countries for child abuse.
Hopefully Indonesia does get the education system up to a high standard.
I think out of the thousands of youngsters I have met over the years, 3 or 4 of them said they want to be teachers - so I doubt this next generation is planning on filling the gaps.
