Garuda Indonesia trapped in a relentless financial tailspin

If you’ve been following the many recent cases of large-scale corruption in Indonesia, you’ll notice that in some instances, those involved were caught storing piles of cash in their own homes or in the homes of relatives or friends, for obvious reasons. Keeping such money in a bank is risky, as it would require explaining its origin, and there’s also the possibility that the funds could be frozen beyond their control.

In situations like these, prosecutors do count the money as they will need to declare the total amount of seized cash to report it officially in the press conference. As shown in some documentaries, this is typically done by having several people count the banknotes. It is highly individuals counting the banknotes are professionals such as bank cashiers.

Yeh exactly what I said in #54 and you then said the same in #55

Exactly What ?? The query is .'.I mean who's gonna exactly count them?'
In the previous post did not explain this.

Also about this statement
"Just nick $10m and buy a couple of apartments and some land, build a reasonable size house and buy a range rover and be happy."

If it were that simple, and not easy to catch, many money launderers and tax evaders would already be doing it. The exception would be in cases involving scams, where a fake notary or property lawyer is used. After collecting enough money, they disappear, leaving the buyers to deal with the authorities. Also, in the investigations the authorities could easily establish a case to convict them, just by analysing the buyer income and the income tax history.

In Indonesia a more delicate way and new method of laundering the money are using celebrities, influencers flaunting their lifestyles and businesses. This method have been used in Indonesia and worldwide. It is not as simple as using proxies to buy properties. It takes time, and effort but more difficult to prove it.

Just buy some real estate and store some cash in a bank in country that has no extradition treaty with Indonesia.
When the heat gets to high here, jump on the plane and join your "second home".

Don't forget the second citizenship as well.

It's actually possible to buy a banking licence in the Marshall Islands and then you can just launder your own money.

Sure but must be done on time. Fugitives are hard to get a citizenship even with money.
Needs a bit of advance planning of course....

But no need to go far....

"Indonesia lacks formal, fully ratified extradition treaties with several nations, notably Singapore, despite close proximity and high-profile cases of fugitive flight. Other countries without active, ratified treaties with Indonesia include China, although treaties are often handled via bilateral agreements or extradition requests based on mutual legal assistance (MLA)"

  • Singapore: As of 2007, a treaty was signed but not fully ratified, making it a common gap in legal cooperation.
  • China: While bilateral, formal treaties are often in the process of negotiation or ratification, not currently in force.
  • Other Potential Non-Treaty Areas: Many nations in Africa, the Middle East, and parts of Europe may not have formal treaties with Indonesia, relying instead on international conventions (like the UN Convention Against Corruption) or diplomatic arrangements.
  • Lack of Treaty

    No Extradition:
Even without a treaty, individuals can still be returned through diplomatic, case-by-case negotiations, as seen in cases with other nations.
