The article highlights the challenges encountered by 87 Indonesian students at Harvard University as a result of Donald Trump’s policies limiting foreign student admissions. In response, Indonesia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs is closely monitoring the situation and providing support. Harvard has legally contested the policy, leading to a temporary two-week halt in its implementation. Meanwhile, the Indonesian government has expressed its concerns to the United States, emphasising the valuable contributions Indonesian students make to education and scientific advancement in the country.
Many of these students likely completed their senior high school education in Indonesia, proving that the country’s education system can indeed produce individuals capable of competing at top-tier universities globally. This is just a small example. I’m aware that a relatively good number of Indonesian students are currently studying at leading universities around the world; some self-funded, while others receive scholarships from the Indonesian government, NGOs, foreign governments, or even the universities themselves.
One notable example is Erina Gudono, the daughter-in-law of former Indonesian President Joko Widodo and wife of his son, Kaesang Pangarep. She is currently studying for a master's degree at the University of Pennsylvania (UPenn) after receiving a scholarship from the university. Gaining admission to UPenn is already a significant achievement, but earning a scholarship, especially without having previously studied there and while competing against other international applicants makes her a good example how Indonesian education could produce a world class graduate. She graduated from SMAN 3 Yogyakarta, and do her first degree at Gajahmada University.
