I was wondering is it better to process the renewal of your passport by mail or to do it in person by making the trip to the US embassy?
I appreciate any input.

I personally would do it myself so a) you know it's there and b) they can check it and tell you that you forgot something
Since you are here in the same city etc

I did my passport as well as my kid’s in Jakarta last Dec. If you are in Indonesia, and Jakarta is nearby, or in your travel plans, then in person is fine. The consular officer said they really try to do only emergency passport at the embassy.

Turnaround was pretty quick. A week if I recall right.

That's faster than processing it in the US, from what I hear! "expedited" here means waiting for over a month, unless you get an in-person appointment with proof of impending travel

My experience of getting new Indonesian passport outside Indonesia typically 1 - 2 days only, while the fastest was 2 hours, the new passport was given when I had coffee with the ambassador.

When I renewed my US passport I do so at the Embassy. 3 days was the total time for start to ready to be picked up. All done electronically. Normal renewal.

Oh, I mean US passport in the US.

For Indonesian passport, consulate tends to be really fast except when I had to renew over a year in advance

Doing it in person through the embassy was easy for me. Just had to schedule an appointment, bring the old/current passport and that's about it. Easy peasy.
