Safety and Security on the Road

An Om who moved to Australia twenty five years ago (great timing), had his Rolex taken off his wrist after he put his left arm on the top of the door armrest. At the time it happened quite a lot, it was a bit the male version of the purse theft.

Not to endorse any brand, there are many on the market.

tinted windows defnitely will help, prevents people from peeking in to see what you have. As they say, you just need to have 1 more lock than what your neighbour has. Thieves will always steal, robbers always rob, the difference is which target seems to be easier.

What thieves usually do is they use some kind of relay between the real key fob and the car. It requires the car to be fairly close to the key fob (so, like in the driveway and the key inside the house). The relay amplifies the key fob or the car's signal (forgot which), thus establishing a connection.
About the amplification method that @El_Goretto describes; now that is a real problem. Very popular way to steal cars in Europe, where there are not that much gates and fences. So there have to be two car thieves, one stands at your door or window and tries to pick up the signal from your FOB. The signal is sent to the car which can be opened and there they go... So it is wise to keep a distance between your car keys and the door. Even better is to store the keys in a metal container like a tin or can, then the signal is blocked.

Some German brands (BMW, Audi, VW) have started building in a motion sensor / detector in the FOB (remote control of the car).

So if it's not moving while operated, the car should not open.

That's a simple and elegant solution.

Btw, Toyota has a battery saving mode in its remotes which also stops the signals from the FOB.

You keep on presssing the Lock button, and press the Unlock key twice. Then there will be no more pinging from the remote and it goes in stand-by.

To reactivate the FOB, press Unlock once.

The police issued a warning recently that if you are approached by a "missing child" on the street carrying a note of the child's address and asking you to take him/her home, don't bring her anywhere except the police station because it's a trap to rob you while delivering the child.

There was also an incident where the house of COVID-19 patients where visited by fake "government sterilization team" who then tie-up household members and rob the house. How they knew details and home address of COVID-19 patients is still a "mystery".
