According to the SA doctors very mild symptoms. Is the new variant more deadly? I saw some anecdotal comments about it infecting younger people but that seemed to connect with them also being more unvaccinated and it didnt really say how sick they got.
Younger people, College students were the first and younger normally have lighter symptoms. SA experts are saying just that. They do not have the data where anything much can be told about this varient, only the cases in the younger people. Wait a couple weeks and you will get some info on severity, how fast it can spread, and how it reacts to vaccines. They are working on all this now but right now, there are no answers. Only assumptions of what is possible based on any relationship to other viruses in regards to the many mutations this virus has. It has more than any other covid virus so yes,a reason to be cautious.According to the SA doctors very mild symptoms.

South African Doctor Says Patient With Omicron Variant Has Very Mild Symptoms, Can Be Treated At Home
A South African doctor who was one of the first to suspect a different strain of coronavirus among patients, said on Sunday the symptoms of the Omicron variant have so far been mild and can be treated at home.voi.id
This article is actually taken from Reuters so should have some credibility. It does not mention any college students, and if it has any connection with students maybe a source would be helpful.Younger people, College students were the first and younger normally have lighter symptoms. As for the spread. Chances are very good it is already all around the globe. Hard to detect if not testing for it. Now, they are and I think you will find it everywhere they are testing. Of course, while some gov say they are testing, probably not or they are keeping it under wraps to get the tourist back.
SA has some pretty strict exit travel requirements. 2 vaccines, PCR test, and testing upon arrival. Probably no reason for all these travel bans. Probably too late any way.
Actually my say wasn't taken from any particular source. It came from an assirtment of sources and yes, the early SA cases were primarily college students. There is nothing anywhere reliable stating that this varient spreads faster or is more severe. Doctors treating the current SA cases are saying the symptoms are mild to moderate and not needing hospital care. Wait the two weeks to formulate the data and then everyone can say this or that. In the mean time, no one actually knows anything factual and this forum shouldn't be a place to spit out falsehoods and guesses. This article is actually taken from Reuters so should have some credibility. According to other sources, the new variant is five times more infectious than THE delta, so it should be dominant very fast. If it is very mild, it would be maybe&hopefully, the end of the pandemic, as everybody will get infected.
These crystal healers and shamans said could be 500% more infective 3 days ago. 500% means 5x.There is nothing anywhere reliable stating that this varient spreads faster or is more severe.
It was an interview with a big wig doctor from SA Ministry of Health on CNN Monday. Students as in college students.Where are the data about the infected students?

According to you we shouldn't believe her since she was on CNN yesterday stating basically the same thing. Damn American media. When will they ever learn?Piece of good journalism, much different than usual American propaganda
The SA doctor said "The symptoms at that stage are strongly associated with normal viral infections. And since we haven't seen COVID-19 for the past eight to 10 weeks, we decided to do a test," she said, adding that the patient and her family turned out to be positive, cited from Reuters, November 29
Correct, the way the world, US in front, attacks SA is a shame.Oh oh, more nasty propaganda from US news. SA was not the first to have this new variant it seems. Existed in at least Europe before SA discovered it. Other labs in Europe are now finding it as they retest earlier samples. It would seem SA is just better at evaluating and testing than most nations. Of course, since this was reported in US media we should just really ignore it. Propaganda. Evidently better to get our information from the Russian or Chinese media.
Sorry, never a fan. Awww, another bubble burst. I think he might have been on very early morning here and the TV isn't on until maybe evening. FYI, CNN does have a web site with lots you can read or see. Imagine that, 21st Century and they already have a web site. Damn, technology at full speed.I suppose Cuomo Prime Time was your favorite show.
Cases have spiked FAST in South Africa, prominently of the Omicron variant. Deaths usually trail by 2-4 weeks, so it remains to be seen how this variant compares in virulence. On a serious note, since omicron was first detected, has anyone seen a spike in cases/deaths being reported?
I think they caught this so early that we just don't know yet. When the UK variant was noticed it was already widespread in the UK - I think they caught this one earlier (or SA caught it in a region of very poor surveillance so we just don't know anything...esp since the age demographics of many southern African countries skew v young - even in south africa I think only about 6% of the population is 65+)...I don't think we can make any judgements till it starts spreading somewhere in the west.On a serious note, since omicron was first detected, has anyone seen a spike in cases/deaths being reported? This time last year, the UK variant was announced, there were new cases, quarantine added, entry restrictions, etc.... Last June, delta is announced, lots of cases and back to lockdown. Now, it is just extended quarantine and entry restrictions.
