Not so smart...

I'm sure many remember Greg, the American guy in Lombok who went a step too far and cut his local Mosque's speaker cables such was his frustration at the racket. IIt's fair to say things didn't end well for him.

i overheard once that those who complained about mosque loudspeaker were the devil because the devil could't stand the word of Allah or something like that. its like the saying arguing with pig in a mud, by the end of the day you realize the pig love it.
took me about two weeks for my head to ignore the loudspeaker while i sleep.

I agree, the discussion is useless. And people who agree with you will never speak up. (Except the old guy in Aceh some time ago.)

If you hear the French Bule talk in the video, his Bahasa is not that bad. So assuming he’s been here for some time already, he ‘should’ know better.

Since he is caught on tape, I'm sure he's screwed. He would be lucky if he doesn't get hit with penistaan.

.
At the end you see an apology with a very happy police officer as angel of peace.

Now I do understand the fear factor (also from his Indonesian wife) but to hide behind ‘I didn’t know’ is a bit weak. Why not state you respect Islam but don’t like little kids screaming through the speaker system and you feel that is also not reverend towards the religion?
.

It is hard to believe he didn't know better - but I've been saved from some dumb mistakes myself, and in retrospect I can't imagine why in both cases I didn't know better:

1) In the 1990s I took a hilarious photo of a friend of mine, who happens to be black (half German, half Liberian, actually), standing in front of the Irian Barat statue (the one near the Borobudur Hotel) mimicking the pose with a big shit-eating grin on his face. It pains me to admit I could be so stupid, but I was going to use this as the magazine cover photo for a story on expats in Indonesia.

2) Just 3 or 4 years ago, I was preparing an "Infrastructure by the Numbers" column in which I put the fact that the amount of trash collected every day in Jakarta could fill the Borobudur Temple. (I didn't come up with that, at least - I sourced it from someone else.)

Luckily in both cases someone pointed out to me that these were really, really, really bad ideas, before we went to press. I am grateful, because I don't think there are enough :doh::doh::doh::doh::doh: in the world to express how idiotic I was to not think things through.

Amateur ? Cut one wire, add volume control. It still works just not quite so loud no one will notice. Method 2 nudge speaker a bit so the sound goes somewhere else.

If all the calls to prayer in Indonesia would be synchronised and sound like this I think even the Frenchie in question would appreciate it.

Then again this wasn't a call to prayer but the actual prayer being broadcasted, I believe that's an Indonesian thing as I never heard that in the Middle-East, except I believe sometimes for Friday prayer. Maybe akin to this :

Nice.

Yes, I hear that quite often, the broadcast of the actual ‘preaching’ in the mosque.

And I’m quite sure (Dan will know) there is a Hadith which states that’s not allowed; people should stop doing what they’re doing when they hear ‘the word of the Lord’ and listen. Obviously that is not feasible. (Gardeners, Satpam, Kaki5, ...)

Now if that’s the case, those make perfect arguments to challenge the sound but only if it doesn’t come from a kafir. And that’s the problem.

It's very rude to go round to your neighbour's house and point out their wallpaper is crap.
He moved here so he pretty much has to accept local ideals or sod off back to France.

However, in slight mitigation of his idiocy, some mosques do go a little far and some callers, whilst trying their best, aren't always as good as would be ideal ..... but I have an idea that might well be helpful.

The call to prayer is a thing of beauty and should be recited with a beautiful voice, but top quality callers aren't available to every mosque so perhaps some sort of central live broadcast (maybe by cellphone app) would allow all mosques in a given area to have perfect timing for the calls, and all have the same professional and wonderful voice.

Kop for this dude and his great call to prayer - this is how to do it in such as way as to celebrate the beauty of Islam, the beauty of prayer to Allah, and all with the bonus of producing a beautiful call.

I think most would agree this call is fabulous and a real celebration of the beauty of Islam.

You know what they say about, "If you can't beat them ..."

Well down here in Pelabuhanratu on the south coast of Jawa we have two churches that do regular business and a number of Christian groups (Evangelists, Baptists, etc) that do their thing in the back room of hotels and I thought wouldn't it be really nice to hear the peel of church bells on Sunday mornings.

Now who could object to that?

Look on the bright side Frenchie - at least they didn't come round your house beat the shit out of you, destroy your home, and the then police arrest you for blasphemy like they did in forward thinking "why the fuck don't the tourists come here??" Lombok
