Police dealing with a “serious incident” in Manchester have confirmed a “number of fatalities” amid unconfirmed reports of an explosion.

Officers said people were also injured in the incident and warned people to stay away from Manchester Arena while they dealt with the issue. Officers did not release any further details on what has happened. A concert by the American pop singer Ariana Grande was being staged at the time.

Hannah Dane, who was at the concert, told the Guardian there was “quite a loud explosion heard from inside the Manchester arena and it shook, then everyone screamed and tried to get out”.

She added: “As we got outside, lots of police came racing towards the area and the whole of the Victoria train station was surrounded by police.” She said there were people “screaming and crying everywhere shouting that there’s a bomb and also people were saying there’s a shooter”.

Dane said police were blocking off roads in the area. “There are sirens zooming everywhere.”

Suzy Mitchell, 26, whose flat is opposite the venue, reported a huge bang rocking the neighbourhood.

She told the Press Association: “(I) just heard a huge bang from my bed, came out to the front of my apartments (we’re on the top floor so have perfect view) and everyone was running away in big crowds. The bang was so big I heard it from my room which is at the back of the apartment blocks.

“Currently lots of emergency services going to and from. But can’t see anything substantial as of yet except fleeing people and lots of cars.One fan at the concert said an explosion hit the venue as fans were leaving the building.

Majid Khan, 22, said: “I and my sister, along with a lot of others were seeing Ariana Grande perform at Manchester Arena, and we were all exiting the venue when around 10.40-10.45pm-ish a huge bomb-like bang went off that hugely panicked everyone and we were all trying to flee the arena.

“It was one bang and essentially everyone from the other side of the arena where the bang was heard from suddenly came running towards us as they were trying to exit Trinity Way and that was blocked so everyone was just running to any exit they could find as quickly as they could.

“Everyone was in a huge state of panic, calling each other as some had gone to the toilet whilst this had gone off, so it was just extremely disturbing for everyone there.”

Witnesses reported helicopters were circling above the scene after reports of the blast.

National Rail said all lines in and out of Manchester Victoria station were closed.

At this time the police suspect a suicide bomber with a nail filled bomb. The venue is reporting that the bomb went off just outside but was large enough to cause injury inside. The people were just leaving the concert.

I talked to a mate who had a friend standing nearby but not directly at the site. Apparently the friend said he was knocked about 30 feet.

Well so far 4 people have been arrested and a flat in Manchester is being searched, so things seem to be moving in the right direction, the Manchester police say they are investigating a network, they didn't elaborate on that statement

This was definitely not some dinky pressure-cooker bomb. It's sounding more and more like military grade explosive, especially since it was small enough to be carried by one person.

There was a chap on sky news this morning justifying the bombing because we are killing Muslim children, I thought that was ISIS
