KPK raid Bandung prison

Although it might not come as a surprise to some here, KPK has recently raided the "Sukamiskin" Prison in Bandung and has been "shocked" to find "luxury" cells. Apparently prisoners had keys to their own cells and "even" had water heaters installed in their showers, the audacity!

Instead of arresting the warden I think they should be giving him a medal for bringing his prison to "international standards" without the Indonesian Government having to have pay a penny for it.

Also completely in line with European standards, where you get day or even weekend leave under certain conditions, the guy is a visionary.

Artalyta Suryani, she stayed at Pondok Bambu.

And remember Tommy Suharto, (the son of), who even had his own personal staff and used a helicopter landing pad for his regular trips. And he served 4 years or so of the 15 year sentence (for ordering the murder of a judge).

But in fact, many are convinced those people do a service to society, they keep the inmates calm. Tommy for instance, built a small factory inside the prison for the prisoners.

Hilarious that one, as it shows up in many of the "most luxurious prisons of the world" lists. If only they knew haha.

And yes, the Musical Chairs has already started; the Justice Minister Yasonna Laoly just fired two heads (responsible for correctional services) of West Java.

Sometimes it seems like the whole situation with Escobar or Guzmán; it doesn't improve the situation to remove people since others are ready to take their place.

If every cell looks like this, I applaud them. However, I expect not, and that there are only a few of these reserved for those who have participated in the corruption.

If I was thrown into an indonesian prison, received water heater, ac and... kopi(?), id 100% be on my best behavior!

I've seen his house, it's in a nice neighborhood but not exactly extravagant. And considering his general stance as well as the amount of scrutiny he must be under, I'm sure he's just in a regular cell.

What you cannot figure out,they get put in prison and they then corrupt the prison system, unbelievable really, no wonder when you see them arrested they are all smiling, they have nothing to fear, it’s busine as usual

The press always try to sensationalise Sukamiskin- what they always forget to say is that the buildings are around 100 years old & we can imagine what state 100 year old constructions are in.
They (sensationalist reporters) always seem to point out a/c as a luxury. Hot water is (to my thinking) essential in Bandung as it gets pretty cold in the mornings
To be honest a/c isn't necessary.

There are other things that would probably raise brows more than this- however as already pointed out the standards in there are what most prisoners for white collar crimes would get as the norm in most places around the world.
Maybe they want the prison system to be archaic? Perhaps they should look at chaining people to the walls and just feeding gruel until the release date?

Sukamiskin is not a prison for violent criminals- in the UK we have open prisons for people who aren't committed for violent crimes.

That is an excellent idea, along with a cleaner legal system and taking their money.

There are dismantling 32 saung (kind of small houses, closed gazebos, luxury sheds) as we speak. Which were only used by 'privileged' guest. Also, they found another 112 million in cash.

This program gets a lot of attention, it was on TV yesterday. While the rooms are checked and some are literally being stripped, the journalist Naiwa Sihanouk is visiting some of the high profile graft prisoners in their cells.

Well, 'their cells' is relative; it seems they put two guys, namely Nazuraddin and Novanto, in a different and rather archaic cell. Pretending they are not in a luxurious environment at all. But the scam didn't work and now it has become even more awkward for those involved...

Sorry but where I come from, white collar criminals are locked up in the same conditions than other criminals for one simple reason: they are all criminals and should be equal before Law and imprisonment.

In France, there are three types of jail (Maison the Correction formerly known as Maison d'arret, Centre de Detention and Maison Centrale) and the difference which makes that you are oriented to one or another is the length of your sentence.This is within the jail that a separation takes place but detention conditions are (almost) the same for all when it comes to facilities offered.

The above is obviously not an intend to say that the jail system in France is not corrupted. It is, like anywhere in the world probably.

People who are in Sukamiskin have greatly contributed to impoverish this country and its people and I believe that yes, they should be held in the same conditions that those who are poor and jailed. With the trillions milked in corruption, many of these other criminals may have had Education and perhaps the chances allowing them a life different than a criminal life. The one who are in Sukamiskin had everything and therefore do not have this excuse. It has been their choice to ruin this country and held in impoverishment many of its people.

Your comment about "the standard in there are what most prisoners for white collar crimes would get as the norm in most places around the world" makes me cringe. What about having first the schools and the hospitals as a similar standard as what we may find in many places in around the world before making posh prison?

If anyone is tempted to use the argument that they paid these luxuries with their own money, it is utter garbage: they pay with the money they stole from Indonesia for years or decades.
