Indonesia Government Using Spyware Against Opposition
The great irony is that the software is developed by an israeli firm, NSO Group .
Maybe they can blame the israeli U-20 football squad?

Behind a paywall, sorry. This is what I copied from an email:

The world's most sophisticated spyware Pegasus, a so-called “zero-click” program capable of reading text messages, tracking calls, collecting passwords, tracking locations, and accessing target devices' microphones and cameras surreptitiously, apparently has found its way into Indonesian state agencies to spy on opposition political figures and activists, according to the Jakarta-based journalism consortium IndonesiaLeaks.
Sakti Wahyu Trenggono, currently the minister of maritime affairs and fisheries, was said to have had a special room in his house where spyware was allegedly used to seek to tilt the president’s reelection bid in Jokowi’s favor, according to the report, which Sakti denied.
Once installed, Pegasus is said to be able to extract contacts, call logs, messages, photos, web browsing history, and settings in devices that supposedly are encrypted including but not limited to iMessage, WhatsApp, Telegram, and lesser programs including Gmail, Viber, Facebook and Skype without detection. It is said to be able to hide itself and self-destruct to eliminate evidence if unable to communicate with its command-and-control server for more than 60 days, or if on the wrong device. Pegasus can also self-destruct on command. It can be installed by setting up a wireless transceiver near a target device, or by gaining physical access to the device…
