A historic meeting today between the leaders of North and South Korea have come to an agreement to declare an end to all animosity towards each other and to the war between the two.
This is all very sudden and I'm sure Trump will hail it as a personal triumph but some studies below may contradict that.....

Kim’s nuclear test site has collapsed, say scientists

North Korea’s nuclear test site is believed to have collapsed, rendering the secret base unusable and potentially explaining Kim Jong-un’s newfound willingness to discuss ending his weapons programme.

At least five of the six nuclear tests carried out over the past 12 years were at Punggye-ri, in the northeast of the country, at a site carved out of the 7,200ft Mount Mantap. Scientists who have studied seismic data from the region believe that part of the mountain collapsed as a result of the most recent test, on September 3. It had a yield of 250 kilotons, almost 17 times that of the Hiroshima bomb, and caused a 6.3-magnitude earthquake......

Wen Lianxing, a seismology professor at Stony Brook University in New York, and head of the three-strong team that studied the seismic data from Mount Mantap, said the mountain collapse meant that the site could no longer be used for nuclear tests. “Given the history of the nuclear tests North Korea performed beneath this mountain, a nuclear test of a similar yield would produce collapses in an even larger scale, creating an environmental catastrophe,” he said. “Any further disturbance from a future test could generate earthquakes that may be damaging by their own force or crack the nuclear test sites of the past or the present.”

Mr Wen collaborated with two researchers from the University of Science and Technology of China, in Hefei, eastern China. A second study, conducted by six scientists from China, the Czech Republic and Greece, sought to explain the delayed shock that occurred after the September blast.

“According to our model, the explosion created a cavity and a damaged ‘chimney’ of rocks above it,” they wrote in the journal Geophysical Research Letters. “The aftershock was neither a secondary explosion nor a triggered tectonic earthquake. It occurred due to a process . . . that is, a rock collapse, or compaction, for the first time documented in North Korea’s test site.”

Chinese scientists monitored the aftermath of North Korea’s sixth nuclear test closely for any signs of radioactive leaks. Wang Naiyan, a former chairman of the China Nuclear Society and senior researcher on China’s nuclear weapons programme, told South China Morning Post that he had concerns over the mountain’s geological integrity. Another test might cause the entire mountain to cave in on itself, he said, exposing a hole from which radiation could escape and drift across the region, including China. “We call it ‘taking the roof off’,” said Mr Wang. “If the mountain collapses and the hole is exposed, it will let out many bad things.”

Given the two Koreas have now agreed to never invade each other, logically, this should remove the United Nations mandate to protect South Korea and therefore USA troops should vacate the Korean peninsula and maybe concentrate on a better alliance with Japan.....???
Perhaps this is Trump's strategy to disengage... and then missile N. Korea for not complying with their aggressive threat to send a nuclear-tipped missile to USA, knowing they have now agreed to NEVER invade South Korea, which has been the reason for not attacking N. Korea in the past.

Just a thought!!!

Just my personal view but I really think Kim is one smart person. Young but not stupid.

He appears to have played the game well to this stage and I honestly think he is wise enough to look after himself on the global stage. The insults as little rocket and so on have come from trump but have not appeared to have deterred his overall aims.

Remember China is still a communist country which has been led by similar people but they have developed military power and know are very much an economic power.

I would suggest he following the same approach albeit I suspect he wants a unified Korea run by the North.

I said in an earlier post that Trump may be on the verge of history over the proposed meeting and that he had an opportunity to go down in history. However it impossible to know what he will do in the talks with Kim now that the talks are very likely to happen.

Rescind Obama's Nobel peace price and give it to Trump!

Only communist-ish in government. The rest is capitalist. Chinese people can make as much money as they want. They are just not allowed to use it in politics.

If one is Chinese and lives in China it is quite clever.

Totally agree and suggest that this is Kim's aim. That will take a massive transformation but in the end what would be wrong with communist-ish in government with a capitalist flavour in North Korea.

N. Korea developing a capitalistic economy isn't an issue...it is their ability, and threat, to nuke USA and Japan that is the big question and the one Trump should focus on.
I'm sure the West doesn't care about N. Korea becoming a global trade-competitor .....they'd be happy to help.

Kim Jong Un is one smart cookie. He has worked very hard to cement his stranglehold on North Korea: Kill all possible challengers, including his uncle and brother. Develop thermonuclear bomb.

He understands that an even crazier man than him leads the US, so it is best to show a reasonable side to both the US and South Korea.

Look at that video of him crossing over to SK. He totally dominated that encounter, especially the part where he invites SK's president to cross over to the North for an additional symbolic handshake. It was a total charm offensive. Masterfully done.

What I see is that the South is a failed state in terms of the number of ex-leaders either in prison on with pending court cases for corruption/cronyism et al.. Then there are the chaebol. Which I suppose are OK if benign but they don't seem to be as far as the workers are concerned. Agreed the South lives on a knife edge so they have to be getting a move on with everything.

Having a Chinese style system in the North might not be a bad thing for the people of the North. Certainly better than they have now.

If sincere the biggest thing is the agreement to end hostilities or potential hostilities between North and South. But de-nuclearization leaves the south vulnerable to horde -like invasion from the North.

China is the Kim model; a country where absolute political power resides in the hands of self-perpetuating leadership; a leadership which realizes that economic well being requires the individual motivation and innovation that flourishes best under capitalism.

(How's that for a one sentence view of where Kim's head is at? Trump's head, on the other hand, is little more than an empty vessel, a face in the mirror.)

The US pulls out, North Korea takes over and rules the unified country. Sama-sama Vietnam. History repeating its self.

S Korea, unlike S Vietnam, has a real, independent government and economy.

So the meeting yesterday was all a show and Kim never intended to mutually create peace on the Korean Peninsula....someone better tell Trump before he commits.

Btw....Unified Vietnam is doing quite well. I had a holiday there recently.

The Avengers should sign up a new hero, since the only one to ever beat Captain America was Captain Vietnam

Yes, they do. Give the Commies more to think about before their next move.
As a point of information, Communism, as a political and economic system, has long been relegated to the dust bin of history. In fact it never was more than a facade for authoritarian rule and a state controlled economy.

which btw is the only word in the english language with every vowel in consecutive order

I do understand with these two jokers you did not want to use the word ‘abstemious’. Or it did not come to mind.
