This is more of a where to find...but...its also a hobby so i'm gonna just post it here.

I have this project in mind where i build a robot of sorts to play a bamboo gamelan. I say bamboo gamelan because well, no doubt it's cheaper and also because i havent the slightest clue to as what the name of the specific instrument is. It is basically a xylophone but made from bamboo and has different keys...common in Bali i think.

This project is mostly to learn how to do it and also do something amusing or interesting for the end result.

So, does anyone know where to find this instrument that doesnt come with harga bule?

I think you should contact the resident expert on this. Puspa

hahaha yeah was just thinking this...

I'm pretty sure this is called a Rindik Bambu and is the speciality of areas in western Bali. You could always just rock up to the city of Negara and ask around.

Indonesian Xylophone is Kolintang, common in Sulawesi Utara and Gorontalo. Atlantis can probably help you find a reputable manufacturer.

They make the angklung near us, I could ask if they do/can make these too if you wish- you know how to contact me :)

My connection died while I was typing an answer last night - here's what I had written (consistent with some of the advice above given while I was off-line):

Hmm...to be honest, a bamboo gamelan sounds a bit like a "bamboo trombone" -- you can use your imagination and make one, but the results won't be much like a regular trombone (not that that is necessarily a bad thing).

Are you sure you aren't thinking of either kolintang or anklung rather than gamelan?

There has been at least one robot built to play gamelan, the gamelatron but it used at least some traditional materials (ie, metal - bronze or at a minimum iron).

Anyway, if you give me more details about what you mean (a youtube video of the instruments you envision being played would be great), I may be able to post a question for you on my gamelan group. But AFAIK there isn't any "do it yourself kit" available for any kind of robotic gamelan, bamboo or otherwise. I could be wrong, though!

Rindik is what i'm looking for. Guess I'll be making a rindikatron. :)

As for making a robotic kit, yeahhhh that's gonna be me flexing my brain muscles. I'm quite certain that there's no kits out there, but I have an idea of how to do it. :)

Well, good luck! Be sure to post a youtube video of the result!
