Concerns Rise for Indonesian Democracy in New Government

Prabowo seeking to consolidate power via an overwhelming coalition so big it is unassailable by a legislative opposition and nullifying the necessary checks and balances of democracy, critics say.​

Soon, more Ministers who knows nothing about their new responsibilities. Won't matter. Now you will get more on the gravy train.

I said before the election or even before we all knew who the candidates would be, with Prabowo, democracy in Indonesia will take a hit. Be prepared for some of Suharto's ways returning. Be concerned if the military starts getting more power and begins to take on police matters. For Prabowo, it's all about power over everything.

I believe the first two are true and the third is not hidden knowledge, but none at all of the Atrocities! ! They don't teach that in the schools here! They should be told how he made his family very rich, and was a Dictator for over Thirty Years!

A Suharto contribution was that during his reign, the Islamic Mass Organizations and Arab/Indonesian Muslim leaders were kept on the quiet side unless needed by him. That all ended at his fall.

During Suharto's reign Indonesia was listed by the UN as being one of the top 10 nations for suppression if it's people. My wife could fill a book trying to leave, or as she puts it, escape from Indonesia under Suharto's rule in 1973. Government officials at the Regional and City levels all thought if themselves as mini Suharto and felt they had all the power to do as they pleased at their level. Needless to say, a young female having the audacity to try and leave their tight grips would not be acceptable without great cost and humiliations. Especially one who's father was previously associated with Sukarno's security and not of Indonesian blood. Nor was he Muslim. It took a helpful heart of a foreign Embassy officer, a foreign passport, and passage to that destination to get her out of the grips of the Suharto led government.

Too many accusations for the new government without basis. The incumbent one is the one that made the hard lifting in suppressing the democracy and human rights.

Castrating the journalism is now the agenda.The new law revision bans investing journalism.

Saw an extended interview on CNN Singapore channel today with Prabowo. The issue of human rights in Papua was raised and more or less brushed aside with an assurance that any untoward events would be investigated. There was no questioning about Prabowo's role in the case of the disappeared students and no questions about either his personal wealth or the obscene wealth of others such as Tommy Suharto. It will be a brave Indonesian journalist who ever seeks to raise these issues again.... or perhaps a disappeared journalist who ever seeks to raise these issues again.
