Today on my way back to Cikarang I heard in the radio and also I have seen a banner saying that "Since 31 October all the gates in the toll will stop accepting money and the only way to use the toll would be by having one of the available pre-paid toll cards".

Is it going to be on all tolls in the country incl. Jakarta -Bandung?

Sorry i don't know if they are doing all the toll roads. I do know that this is probably good in the long run provided it is run properly. I know i recently hard my card stolen by the car repair guys (i shouldn't have left it in there) and found it very annoying to get a new one. At the beginning you could get them in Alfa marts and similar places but i tried about 15 different ones and no one had any cards. I don't know about topups so lets hope that is easier. I know that you cant do at it most of the tolls.

Indomart in bali sell them and top up , works fine .

I am looking forward to being able to use BCA / Flazz so I can stop separately topping up my e-Toll from my Flazz card.

I don't remember how I got mine e-money mandiri card. I remember why I stopped using it.
Few years back I used this e-money mandiri prepaid card (I still have it) on couple of occasions until I noticed that some people don't know what GTO is or have not enough credit on the card and start to reverse causing chaos. Ever since then I have been paying cash only as it is hassle free and no need to remember how much cash is left on the card + topping up.

I got couple of those Flazz cards. I never used them after taking out all angpao money from it that is.
But according to bcs-flazz website it can be used on some toll gates?
"Selembar kartu Flazz memiliki multifungsi karena bisa digunakan untuk pembayaran di Tol Surabaya-Gresik, Makassar, Waru-Djuanda, dan Cipali (Cikarang Utama-Cirebon dan Cikarang Utama-Purbaleunyi),"

On a few specific roads only unfortunately.

The new BCA debit cards have Flazz build in, although even though I've had it in my credit-card for ages I've never actually used it except for the rare few free parking promo's from Secure Park at some malls.

I wouldn't see the benefit of flazz at those GTO's either, as I keep my debit/credit-cards in my wallet and don't want to keep taking it out for paying the toll.

What I would love to see is for all toll gates to accept the "on board units", and that the card I put in that unit is automatically topped-up from my credit-card once it reaches a minimum threshold > 20rb left on the card = automatic top-up 100/200/500k.

One step further would be postpaid systems. Drive all you want and pay the bill the next month.

all toll gates to accept the "on board units",

Have you used the onboard unit? I want to get one but I'm worried that they will change it to a newer system sometime and it will be wasted. I agree that they need to force change through or it will not happen. I just wish they organized there side better (such as: mandiri and bca cards required?)

I do, 2 out of 4 gates on my daily commute are able to accept it, works fine.

Does Indonesia not have the vehicle mounted transponder widgets, where you creep through without actually stopping.

....

For me it doesn't matter cash or card all of them I keep in my wallet. Personally I think that having flazz card and another different toll payment card is good just in case one will not be accepted the second maybe will (as a bakcup). Especially if they want to be 100% cashless.

I'll see your transponder and raise you open-road tolling. I have fond memories of "paying tolls" in northern Texas without ever slowing down from 70 mph.

I remember the North Dallas Tollway and how even the toll tag lane would come to a snails pace when getting close to a toll gate. You have people in the left lane try to cross several lanes for the cash/exact change only and those in the slow lanes trying to get to the toll tag lane.

All tolls cause bunching.
Indonesia is just slow to implement any new ideas. Labour/manpower is so cheap in RI that, employing people, when most other countries use technology/machinery, isn't a high priority.
I think any method to reduce the restricted flow at a toll is worthy of review...the question is financial viability. To keep the current tolls in RI, but automate with some cashless system, IMO doesn't cost much except finding alternate positions for the cashiers.
We've been back in Jakarta for a week and bought the Indomart top-up card and frequently used with taxis/grab and friends who have been generous to take us home...it works well and we, so far, have sailed through the tolls.
I've no doubt the future will be better but, IMO, a good start.

I'll digress and say...what's with this busway system.
Who would think tying up one third of any major roadway to permit a bus, that only travels every half-hour or so is viable and logical. I've read the statistics on how many use BRT but, to eliminate 1/3 of the roadway just doesn't make sense. Surely they can open to the motor cyclists, who wouldn't restrict the Transjakarta buses, as they can very easily move out of the way, and thus reduce traffic congestion.

Tolls do not have to and do not cause "bunching" where transponders are available. Cash and card toll gates, coupled with a Luddite population and a clueless toll road administration do add to Indonesia's maddening traffic congestion.

Another way to pay for road systems is to apply the cost to the registration of a vehicle and eliminate all user-pay tolls.

Edit: Perhaps my simple sentence (all tolls cause bunching) was over-simple but was intended to be in the context of the Jakarta system of tolls. It's pointless to show tolls in other places where there isn't any congestion in the first place, nor to expect Indonesians to purchase expensive gadgets so they can be auto-charged or pay later.
That culture just doesn't abide in Indonesia.....yet!
On my recent trips I noticed there are still those that try to get thru' the cashless toll without sufficient funds on their cards. I cannot see how making them all cashless will work well unless a big stick is applied to those who haven't got the message. i.e make them purchase a one-off toll card, for that toll, at multiples of the normal price.

Nah, not all. The Salik system in Dubai for one doesn’t.

is there a display at the booth to indicate the money remaining on the card?

We've been back in Jakarta for a week and bought the Indomart top-up card

So it is not and doesn't have to be a dedicated "tollway" card?
