Australian journalist has passport seized

I believe many/some Indonesians are aware of the malnutrtion in Papua through some Indonesian newspapers eg. Kompass. Jokowi is trying to develop infrastructure in Papua. There was that mid level policeman in Papua who had stolen soooooo much money through corruption and logging something like 1.7 trillion, sentenced to jail and just leaving or not showing up. It is terrible how some people are so greedy to the detriment of their fellow citizens.

You wouldn't have to dig very deep to find TNI etc involved in making money in Papua.

Clearly the local Army bosses in papua dont like the truth about the unsuitable food being provided for the victims of malnutrition , kudos points to the BBC for exposing this .

Big Brother is clearly watching us here !

I'm not sure it was her reporting as a journalist that got her into trouble...it appears her Tweets, on a private account, was what annoyed the authorities...thus my caution in post # 1.

Jokowi had already indicated he was opening Papua to more accredited journalistic scrutiny but her private Tweets gave them the opportunity to deny her professional reporting

If the news of suffering of the unfortunates with malnutrition etc because of nefarious practices on the ground , it is good whether it comes out via twitter facebook or whatever , hopefully things will improve for the people .

Im sure its tough for in country journalists to get their stories on the bbc because of time pressure editing ,at least now the story is out , Iv heard it said by some of their journalists if they dont get thrown out of some of the "dodgy" countries of the world they aint doing their job , more power to their elbow .

After losing East Timor and then ceasing hostilities in Aceh, Papua is the final remaining stomping ground of the Indonesian military. It's where a soldier can engage in warfare and earn promotion, and engage in dirty business and get rich. No way do they want to change that status quo, so nosey foreigners are not wanted.

Regardless of what it is journalists should understand they can't just post stuff on social media willy nilly. Did she have proof that the food in her picture was indeed aid? Sadly she got caught up in the hormonal addiction of social media where people actually get an endorphin or dopamine release when they post something first. It is the same rush athletes get when winning.
But as she found out while there might be such stuff as free speech it is not universal. Silly woman , lost her job? and her vehicle for change.

Yes, as Trump would say, "Fake news." These days it's considered bad form to shoot the messenger; I suppose accusing reporters of hormonal addiction (whatever that is?) will have to suffice.
